Conor Burke celebrates his last-gasp goal for Clare

Conor Burke punched in a last-gasp goal as Clare denied Waterford at the death to claim a 1-11 to 0-13 victory in the opening round of the Munster minor football championship (phase one) in Quilty last night.

Having trailed by 0-6 to 0-5 lead at half-time, Waterford looked to have done just enough to get over the line as the points of Joe Brennan helped them towards a three-point lead with four minutes to go.

Clare did get it level thanks to two Burke frees and a Shane O’Connell point ahead of Tom Lynch and Paddy McCarthy (free) raising white flags at the other end, which had the Deise lads on the cusp until this late intervention from Burke (see below).

In Fethard, Dylan Cotter struck for a decisive 2-2 as Tipperary recorded a 2-13 to 0-10 over visiting Limerick.

After edging a one-point lead at the halfway stage, Tipp would hit a purple patch after the turnaround that saw them register 1-5 unanswered, including Cotter’s second goal to all but cement the opening victory.
