Ballycumber GAA Club notes

July 23, 2019

Ballycumber GAA Club.

Tullamore Court Hotel Offaly Senior B Football Championship.

Erin Rovers 2---8 Ballycumber 0---9.

The first score in this match played in Doon on Sunday arrived on the twelfth minute and the low scoring trend continued throughout the game. Erin Rovers opened the scoring with a point from a free and added one from play before Nigel Grennan got Ballycumber off the mark. Erin Rovers added two points from play and one from a free before the killer blow of a well taken goal. Only a brilliant block by Donal Lynam prevented another goal and a number of other scoring chances were missed by the Pullough men in the first half. Adrian Kelly scored a point for Ballycumber approaching half time leaving the score at the break 1—5 to 0—2.

Ballycumber made a number of changes to the team and with the assistance of the breeze they set about rescuing the game. But, it was the opposition who got the first point of the half. Joe Lowry and Gary Larkin kicked a point each to reduce the gap. Ballycumber were punished for leaving gaps in their defence as they pressed forward in search of scores when Erin Rovers scored a second goal after a length of the pitch hand passing move. Again a brave block by Donal Lynam prevented another Rovers goal. Cormac Quinn pointed a free and Joe Lowry added three points from frees but Erin Rovers were always able to find a score to stop any momentum that Ballycumber generated. A well taken point by Jack Quinn closed the scoring at 2—8 to 0—9.

Ballycumber have to regroup now and prepare to face our neighbours Tubber in Clara on 3rd August.

Ballycumber 2---10   Shamrocks 1---4.

The first half of this game played in Ballycumber on Tuesday was evenly contested with scores at a premium. Shamrocks raced into an early lead with a goal and a point. Tom Corcoran got the home side’s first point and Mel Guinan added a point from play and one from a free. Shamrocks got their second point before Mel was in the right position to palm the ball to the net to give Ballycumber the lead. The teams were soon level with a Shamrocks point.

Ballycumber dominated the second half restricting the visitors to one second half point. Mel Guinan pointed a free,  Conor Connelly added two points from a free and from play. Mel added two more points before the highlight of the match. Karl Daly started a move in the half back line and he was involved in the move on two further occasions before he drove the ball towards the Shamrocks goal. The goal keeper made a good save but Karl collected the rebound and kicked the ball to the net with his less favoured left foot. Mel added another point to his impressive total and it was fitting that Tom Corcoran closed out the scoring with a point to leave Ballycumber convincing winners and qualified for the championship quarter final.
