U21 B FC: Gaels continue bright start

November 13, 2018

A goal for Darren Kavanagh - St Ultans Cortown Gaels

St Ultans/Cortown Gaels  5-12 Gaeil Colmcille 1-6

Sunday morning saw perfect conditions for football. Bective played host to this u21 B quarter-final between St Ultans/Cortown Gaels and Gaeil Colmcilles.

And it was the men in green and white who opened the brighter. Eoin Kavanagh started where he had left off the game before by scoring his side’s first three points.

The Gaels were well on top in all quarters for the first 15 minutes and made their dominance show on the scoreboard. Meath minor star Cian McBride burst through the kells defence and fired an unstoppable shot into the back of the net.

Kells went on the attack from the resulting kick-out. Good defensive work from Eoin McLoughlin and Cormac Lindsay broke up the play allowing Brian Byrne break up the field at speed. The half-forward eventually found himself baring down on the Gaeil Colmcilles goals. He slipped a hand pass to Darren Kavanagh who applied the finishing touches, for his side’s second goal.

To their credit the Kells men never gave up the fight and came into the game more and more. They spurned three excellent goal chances in the first half. However, they kicked all their frees and eventually scored a goal in the 25th minute. The Kavanagh brothers – Eoin and Darren – scored the final two points of the half to leave it 3-04 to 1-04 at half time.

In truth the game was won in the first ten minutes of the second half. The Gaels scored 1-5 before Gaeil Colmcilles scored their first point in the second half. The goal coming from Luke Carberry, which was a rocket into the top corner. Dylan Byrne scored possibly the point of the game when a flowing team move ended up with Byrne skipping by two defenders and curling a scot over the bar.

Hugh Staunton was dominating the middle third and got his reward when he broke through and split the posts half-way through the second half. The Gaels were sloppy in possession for the remainder of the game. They had the majority of ball but only mustered 5 scores. One being a well taken goal from the penalty spot by Luke Carberry.

Kells did have a penalty of their own late on. However, Keith Hennessy excellently saved to his right and prevented a second goal going by him.

Up next for the Gaels is a semi-final meeting with Rathkenny.
