Brian Hanlon Gaeil Colmcille

Gaeil Colmcille 0-16 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-10

Gaeil Colmcille came out on the right side of this tough battle in Grangegodden on Saturday afternoon thanks to the accurate boot of Brian Hanlon.

In a tense opening half, Donaghmore Ashbourne who were missing their county representation got the opening score of the match on. Gaeil Colmcille responded on 7 minutes when Keith Reilly pointed over to level things up. The sides would be level on 3 more occasions before half time with points from Hanlon (2), Stephen Reddy and Fionn Ferguson saw both sides go in at the break with five points each.

Hanlon was smart out of the blocks in the second half and pointed with his left foot inside 30 seconds of the restart. The next seven minutes would be all Donaghmore Ashbourne as the scored 1-02 without reply to open a four point lead, the biggest of the match so far. Gaeil Colmcille stayed patient and trusted their game plan and points from Reilly and Hanlon narrowed the margin to two points going into the the final 10 minutes of the game.

Hanlon had two frees to pull Kells level and with points Seamus Mattimoe, Oisin Reilly and a huge score from substitute Conal Courtney saw the Kells men pull away in the end and record a three point victory to leave Gaeil Colmcille in pole position in Division One.
