'The nation's favourite tragic comedy unfolding again'

Joe Brolly says Mayo's surprise Connacht SFC semi-final defeat to Roscommon on Saturday evening was "like watching a car crash".

Reflecting on the game on The Sunday Game last night, Brolly referred to Joe Gilroy's blog where he labelled James Horan's men as 'spuddlers'.

"The nation's favourite tragic comedy unfolding again. It is more enthralling watching Mayo losing than watching any other team winning, including the Dubs," he said.

"Joe Gilroy's blog this morning, I don't know if you read it, but he said they have too many spuddlers on the team. I looked that up and it means is 'to appear to be doing the job but not actually doing it at all'."

The Derry man added: “The sense of panic that seized Mayo after the two (early) goals – and they were not able to show that composure. It became a kaleidoscope of disaster. The amount of unforced errors and that sense of panic.

“If that had been the Dubs for example, the Dubs would have said, ‘Hold on boys, Roscommon get an early goal, that’s it, you have had your fun, it’s over now."
