Galbally club notes

September 17, 2018

Galbally GAA would like to thank all those who contributed generously to the Church Gate Collection last weekend. Your continued generosity and support is graciously appreciated as it greatly assists the club to meet the annual running costs. Galbally GAA would also like to thank Cummins Brothers for their generosity in sponsoring a trendy new set of Galbally GAA Jerseys.

The Galbally Intermediate Football team qualified for the County Quarter Final with a 2-8 to 0-7 victory over an already qualified Rathkeale. We finished Group 2 in second place with Rathkeale topping the group and Gerald Griffins finishing in third place. Three teams are tied in Group 1, and due to an earlier walkover in the group, score difference cannot be applied. This will necessitate a three way playoff which will slightly delay the championship for now. As it stands, we will play the eventual third placed team in Group 1 in the County Quarter Final and this will be Mungret, Glin or Athea. The winner of that quarter final will face Pallasgreen in the County Semi Final. The team was Ger Ryan, Tom Davern (Capt), Tony Henebry, Frank Cussen, Mark Quinlan (0-1), Liam Casey, Eoin Halligan, James Ryan (0-2), Dave Cussen, Mike Donovan, James Cummins (1-1), Jamie Morrissey, Ger Quinlan (1-1), Jack Donovan (0-1), Gary McCarthy (0-1). Subs: John Kearns for Cussen, Jacko Mullane for Morrissey, Kieran Hickey (0-1) for Donovan. Highlights of the scores from this game and indeed previous games are available on the Galbally GAA Twitter Page. www.twitter.com/galbally_gaa

It was a productive weekend for the offspring of Galbally GAA. Fabian Ryan, a nephew of Galbally GAA Chairman Tom Quinlan, starred when winning a West Tipperary Under 16 A hurling title. He lined out at wing back for Cashel King Cormacs who defeated Cappawhite/Solohead in the final by 3-12 to 0-8. Another Galbally GAA link with Cashel King Cormacs is Aoife Ryan-Cussen wife of Intermediate Player Frank Cussen and we congratulate them on the recent birth of their son. Her father, the legendary John Ryan Bob of Oola, is also an uncle to Galbally Intermediate Footballer Jack Donovan. John played in goals for Limerick in the 1980 Munster Minor Hurling Final before moving to Cashel. He won a Munster Club Hurling title with Cashel King Cormacs in 1991 and is heavily involved in the club at boardroom level to this day.

The Limerick Ladies Footballers won the All-Ireland Junior Title at Croke Park bridging an eight year gap. Aine McGrath and Clodagh McGrath have strong links to Galbally GAA. Their father, Mike McGrath, was a Galbally GAA warrior who embodied the spirit of Galbally GAA whenever he took to the field. His finest hour was the 1994 County Senior Football Final when the Man of the Match award was bestowed upon him for an immense display including a crucial goal late in the game. They are also nieces of Ger and Aidan Carew who also starred in that 1994 success. Indeed Galbally GAA would like to extend our sympathies to the Carew family on the recent bereavement of TJ Carew.
