Meath’s victory in the Leinster minor ladies football championship was particularly poignant for Kells-based teacher Tiernan De Hál.
The Cup presented to the winning team is named in memory of Tiernan’s late wife, Deirdre – a staunch Dublin GAA follower who died tragically alongside baby daughter Liadan in a road traffic accident in 2001.
Wicklow man Tiernan is a school teacher at Eureka Secondary School in Kells, who contributed three players to the Leinster-winning Meath side, namely Emily-Jo White, Seona Lynch and Ciara Brady.
And, after the Royals’ thrilling two-point victory over Kildare in the Leinster minor ‘A’ final at Kinnegad yesterday – their first such success since 2002 - he was on hand to present a trophy that has a deep personal meaning to him.
