Carnacon’s latest Mayo SFC final success was particularly sweet for joint-manager Beatrice Casey and the players.

The county’s standard bearers coasted to a comprehensive 9-10 to 0-4 defeat on Knockmore in yesterday’s final at Kilmeena with Cora Staunton leading the way with 2-8.

It brought the curtain down on a tumultuous period off the pitch for the all-conquering club who, not so long ago, were thrown out of the competition by the powers-that-be before a successful appeal saw them reinstated.

“Absolutely, in light of all the goings-on over the last couple of months it was hugely important for us to win today,” Casey told The Western People.

“It’s hugely important for the girls, especially the girls who were on the Mayo panel. It’s a great achievement and it shows the spirit and the heart that’s in Carnacon and in everyone that’s involved in the club.”
