Have we seen the last of Cora Staunton in a Mayo jersey?

The revelation by Mayo ladies football manager Peter Leahy that he hasn't spoken to Staunton since her return from Australia where she enjoyed a successful spell with the GWS Giants has fuelled speculation that the 36-year-old may not feature for the Westerners this year.

Speaking to the Western People ahead of Mayo's National League final against Dublin next Sunday, Leahy revealed: "We haven't spoke.

"But the reality is that the panel is open to anyone who wants to play for Mayo and she's one of the best players in the country. We have an emphasis in place: it's about the team. It's not about the individual. Cora is a big name, but if she comes in, she'll be coming in as a team player.

"In order to get into this team, you have to do your job. Our forwards, at the moment, are shooting the lights out. If that continues we're quite happy with the forward line we have."

Asked if the 11-time All-Star will be involved next Sunday, the Westmeath native replied: "I wouldn't have thought so. We'll be dealing with the players we have, but the door is completely open after that. She's an awful lot going on, but I'm not sure."
