Former Kerry All-Ireland winning boss Jack O’Connor is set to become Kildare’s next senior football manager.

O’Connor will succeed Cian O’Neill in the role following his departure last month after four seasons in charge of the Lilywhites.

The Dromid Pearses clubman is set to be appointed to a three-year term and steps into a senior managerial position for the first time since 2012 which marked the end of his second spell with the Kingdom.

He has since been immersed in his native county’s underage teams ever since, guiding the minors to back-to-back All-Ireland victories in 2014 and 2015 before taking on the county U21 side for two seasons, as well as the U20s.

His link with Kildare football comes through his sons Eanna and Cian playing with county champions Moorefield, where he previously served as assistant coach under Ross Glavin.

Kildare county board’s management committee put forward O’Connor’s name this evening, releasing the following statement on the county’s website:

“The Management Committee of Kildare GAA are pleased to nominate Jack O’Connor for the position of Kildare Senior Football Manager for a three year term. The proposal will go before the September County Board meeting for ratification.

“Jack has a wealth of management experience at all levels having won three All-Ireland Senior titles, two All-Ireland U21 title, two All-Ireland Minor titles, three All-Ireland Vocational Schools & one All-Ireland Colleges Hogan Cup. He has also won three National Football League titles as well as numerous Munster titles at all age grades.

“Jack’s proposed backroom team will be announced over the coming weeks.

“A press briefing will organised following the September County Board meeting.”
