St Thomas' will begin their Galway SHC defence in Athenry on Sunday, just three weeks after losing the All-Ireland club final to Ballyhale Shamrocks.

The south Galway outfit will be without cruciate victim Fintan Burke and brothers Kenneth and Eanna Burke for their first round clash with 2017 Tom Callanan Cup winners Liam Mellows in what is a repeat of last year's county final. The reigning champions could also be without Damien McGlynn and James Regan, who are both struggling with knee injuries.

Also on Sunday, Duggan Park in Ballinasloe hosts an attractive double-header featuring Loughrea v Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry and Cappataggle v Sarsfields.

The first round action gets underway tomorrow afternoon when a Portumna side minus Joe Canning will face Turloughmore in Athenry. Later in the day, Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Gort face off in Loughrea, while Duggan Park plays host to the meeting of Castlegar and Tommy Larkins.
