Leagues over, now bring on the zzzzz........

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

So the leagues are over, we have gone from 3 months of weekly action, with a week or two off here and there, all over the country, in the cold and rain, and by May it is all over.
Only to be replaced by a stop-start championship where familiarity breeds repetition breeds borefests, where teams who lose 2 games are done for the summer. So 5-8 matches in Feb-Apr in each code, and only 2 for a good few counties from May-Sept when the conditions are absolutely ideal for supporters and players alike?
You really couldn't make it up. What a farce.

i agree mostly with you. clubs need a chance to also play games in the good conditions in the summer.. however if every other county is like cavan clubs could go a month without action in the summer for one reason or another. I have been saying it all along though that the league should be made a more focal point in the year. So for example play the provincials up to semi final stages in spring and then bring the league in before continuing on the championship.

agreed.

And the farce that is the Connacht Championship starts in less than 2 weeks and will not finish until July 9th.
that is 9 weeks to play 6 games.

also If Sligo are to reach the Connacht final they will have faced a trip to New York followed by a game against Mayo, Then Galway and that is just to reach the final, whereas Roscommon (who play their first game 6 weeks later than Sligo's) face the winners of London/Leitrim and That's it.

Of course the reality is that by the time Roscommon enter the fray Sligo will have played 2 games and been knocked out 4 weeks previously.

How anyone can take the Championship seriously is hard to fathom. If you then start comparing provinces against each other and how their respective competitions are run off and the level of competing teams within each province it all becomes even more of a Joke. And then of course we have the qualifiers (with Roscommon again practically guaranteed a last 12 spot already). and teams from Munster and Connacht entering the second round after playing one game and losing whereas perhaps an ulster or leinster team enter round 2 have played 3 games winning 2 of them.

It needs a massive overhaul

It should be a league format.

It starts in April

Teams of a similar standard playing multiple games against each other across the summer

It would guarantee competitiveness, and we have seen Eir broadcast multiple games now at the same time

So you could have all 4 Div on air at once across a number of platforms, more live games, better exposure for all counties

4 Divisions

Winner of each division moves into a knockout All Ireland Championship and is then promoted for into a higher division the following year

A draw is made for the Semi-Final

Then it's All Ireland Final time

I just pulled this out of me a*se in about 30 seconds... go easy on me

I understand the sentiment however we are coming to the business end of other sports probably not a good idea to launch against them , that said the launch in previous years has been ridiculous low key we could generate far better enthusiasm and marketing than what currently passes when championship does get under way .

I'll go easy on you anyway ;) however i don't really see the point or the appeal in another league, because that's essentially what'd it'd be. we have two ready made competitions as we are. Bring the league out into the summer sunshine and market and promote it. its not being taken half serious enough.....then on the other hand you have teams like carlow and waterford being told that championship is where its at. (no disrespect to those two counties) Summer is when people want to play football and the only consistent competition to do so is the league so no need in any restructuring, however i do understand where you're coming from in regards to the lopsided nature of the qualifiers

Makes no sense alright. New York v Sligo should be a quarter final, not preliminary round. We should play Roscommon in another quarter final. London v Leitrim third quarter final and Galway get a bye to semi final.

Oh boo hoo more whinging
If ye don't like it go watch other sports that run that way. People whinges when league was on that it means nothing, if there was an Olympic sport for whinging this country would be odds on for good.

People are entitled to their opinions. No need to be so rude and condescending.

Three rounds of club league have already been played in Mayo and Club Championship first round is just over a week away. Plenty of action to keep one busy.

For all its flaw's, nothing beats the Championship!!!

Can't wait to hear the Sunday game theme tune on the telly come the 21 May.

And I'm really looking forward to our first outing against Limerick or Clare on 11 June.

Greatest two games in the world and we have them all to ourselves, count your blessings people!

I don't get this attitude. I would say its interesting, bar a few games - primarily those involving the teams expected to reach the latter stages. Its not all about Dublin, Kerry, Mayo etc.

yep the championship is zzzzzz until August.
There might be a couple of exciting lesser provincial championship games but overall the interest will be passive until August.
