Kilkenny 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

They were very good. Cork had them struggling a little bit in the first half and if were any good at all (which we aren't) we would/should have taken a few more of those chances. We let Kilkenny off and then when they got on top, they battered us. We had no answer whatsoever to them.

A key skill in modern day hurling, is the ability to win the at the break down and win possession in the rucks. Kilkenny are brilliant in rucks. They recycle the ball very well and then with some quick handpasses, they get scores. Contrast that with Cork, our players are fumbling and foostering with lose balls, thereby creating more rucks and coughing up more possession. This is a key difference. We cannot win possession in the rucks. Without possession, you can't win: full-stop. We also try a sweeper system but we are not convinced by it ourselves. We don't know how best to make it work. We look silly trying it.

Winning frees is another key skill in hurling. Alan Cadogan is well able to exaggerate to get a free. However, free of the day goes to Paddy Deegan. It was Kilkenny's 14th score. Watch it again. The Cork player has a hand out. Paddy Deegan is barely touched and goes down as if he has been decapitated. Fair play to him of course. This is intelligent play. This is what he should do. The more spectacular the fall, the more likely the free (it is not really relevant if there is a foul or not or who is doing the fouling). Apart from Alan Cadogan who does his own flopping around, we have a lot to learn in this regard too.

The ref took some odd decisions after the melee. If Walter Walsh was booked, then Bill Cooper should also have been booked. He was on a yellow and therefore would have been sent off. Cormac Murphy can have no complaints as he brought the hurley down on a player. Was he the only guilty player of that though? Apparently!!!

Bill Cooper was poor, I thought. He might be better deployed in the forwards. Harnedy was very quiet. Why was Horgan on the bench? Daniel Kearney was a loss, in my opinion. He was winning 'dirty ball'. I thought Cork's defensive showing was improved, though.

I too did notice a couple of very soft frees for Paddy Deegan, while he hurled well he did indeed flop around the place, I hate it, I hate a Wexford man doing it, and the video should highlight these players.
Cadogan does the same as you say.

I don't go to inter-county matches. I can still comment on them, can I not?

They seemed more settled at the back with Murphy back in the corner. Joyce replaced again. The forwards looked more cohesive too with Fennelly back in the team. Still haven't scored a goal in 3 league matches, though.

You probably didn't. The weather was atrocious yesterday. My club had a junior hurling game (14.30 start) and an under 12 game (15.00) cancelled because of the same. I had planned to go the former. The cancellation and the brutal weather kept me inside. I turned on the match and watched it as a result. I have interest in it, only in the fact, that I wish it, and Cork, were better. I keep hoping. I have voted with my feet a long time ago though.

The only player going for goals was Colin Fennelly. If your points out weigh the opposition tally then perhaps Cody is happy with that.

We all want our team to be better bennybunny, keep the faith! The real Cork is somewhere between the Clare result and the Dublin/Kilkenny ones!

One of the hallmarks of the great Cody teams was always going for the jugular i.e. goals. You won't win an All-Ireland hurling title without scoring a few along the way!

i would say if coliin fennelly, walter walsh, richie hogan,tj reid get a dry ball on a dry day they will have no problem going for the jugular.
those 4 forwards alone, make kilkenny a serious outfit still.
they have not gone away.

Ya but their biggest problem is Larkin and Power are gone. They were the two main men to instigate goals for KK with their direct running. Walsh and Fennelly don't have the same brain or skill level of those two.
Anybody have any info on their goal scoring rate? I think I seen an article last years howing a gradual decline in goals scored year on year since 2008 but I can't find it

Kilkenny won the Walsh Cup.
