A new stadium in Connacht?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Roscommon hasn't been listed as a candidate stadium for RWC 2023 bid.

Did know one tell them it's the best located ground in Ireland?

Leitrim clubs have never beaten Galway clubs in 20 attempts. Must be the worst record in club interpro competition.

If we are talking white elephants let's go the whole hog.
€78 million for pairc hi chaoimh

For €30million we can have a new roofed 20,000 stadium in athenry (pubs-check, trainline-check, two motorways-check)
Use another €20 million to upgrade the colooney to Charlestown road and the other €28million to upgrade Claremorris to belmullet road.

I might run for election in this one

NO NO NO. We have 3 big stadiums already that are very rarely if ever full. The 3 big stadia we have are more than sufficient. Why build a new stadium when there are one to two games per year in connacht that attract crowds. Take the replay this year, only 15000 in a stadium that can hold 40000. Makes no sense. It's been a long time since even a galway Mayo final sold out.

I was really Impressed with McHale Park, it probably the best GAA ground outside of Croke Park I had been to.

Would Trump build one in New York or you might build one cheap in London now with the price of the sterling? Worth a shot anyway. Don't see why these two counties aren't getting a fair crack at the whip!!

Well like in Ulster in the noughties if Galway or Roscommon were to make the breakthrough in the all Ireland series that might improve attendances.

Think you've forgot that Galway have won two recent all Ireland's in 98 and 01 . 1944 and 1951 since our last ones so I think you need to button it !

I'm sure in the late 1990s the Connacht championship was a near sell out! Look at
Galway they have in fairness been growning fat on those all Ireland's they have done nothing once they came out of Connacht and haven't won in croke park since 2001 that has obviously impact on the wider demand. Roscommon are drawing a good crowd now as they have a team that is up and coming and Mayo are damn close to reaching the summit but for typical Mayo style there's a fantastic once in a generation team like dublin knocking about. I'm sure if Galway or Roscommon were to have a good run in the championship the interest would increase and the attendance at matches would improve. You can tell me to button it but in as far as Mayo is concern Gaelic football has become a drug to us in the last 20 years and that is to do with those final losses. We are like addicts and if we keep losing they way we have the last 5 years the addiction won't diminish only a return to the barren wasteland that was like between 51 to 81 with 3 Connacht championships and no final appearance.

Also look at the semi final in castlebar this year how many Galway fans travelled (obviously the weather is taken account aswell). A lot wouldn't have thought they would have won, I'd alway expect an ambush when playing Galway unfortunately I was proved right on the day. That's 15 years after their last all Ireland

Ara isn't is great to have a few more stadia though - you can never have enough.

Seriously though didn't Cake suggest a national GAA centre of excellence in Athlone or close to Athlone before? I think its a great idea, a state-of-the-art GAA campus with boarding secondary school, full time GAA coaches and excellent facilities. All leading to a ~40k all seater stadium with motorway access and plenty of parking - it just makes total sense!

There was talks the GAA wanted each province to have a landmark stadium Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Croke park, Casement Park and a Connacht GAA headquarters in Galway city. GAA top brass are waiting on news of the Galway outer bypass route and were considering building along the river Corrib, working along side the Government's new Land Development Agency in a massive redevelopment plan for the Dyke Road area. The GAA were looking into a fully covered stadium holding around 20 thousand people and will be used to promote high quality league games in dry conditions.

Bad enough having 3 provincial venues where the next stop is the sea never mind building another one in Galway, build one near the M6 west of Athlone, why should Leitrim or Sligo people have to travel to Galway when a venue around Roscommon would be closer

Ourselves and yourselves couldn't half fill the Gaelic grounds a few weeks ago. What's the point in spending a load of cash on a ground they won't fill for games, make another county ground redundant, and would rarely fill it every year? If the GAA have cash to spend let them invest it in underage hurling and football development in so-called weaker counties. Could help create some interest in our games in times when attendances are down and will help to improve the standard of our games.

Anywhere around Galway is about as well located as Pairc Ui Chaoimh! A Roscommon town - Athlone location (aka Hyde Park!) is a great location. It would also make sense for some qualifiers. No motorways immediately around Roscommon Town but otherwise the assess shouldn't be an issue

There won't be no new Connacht stadium, total waste of money. Anyway say a new stadium is built, are Mayo and Roscommon going to give away Connacht games and final days in their respective towns to Galway city which already has so much going on in it...? Not a hope.
