A bit general there lad. If you take one prime example of Castlehaven, how many of those players are actually from Castlehaven (there are a few but there are plenty carted in as well-many coming from nearby parishes that have other clubs in that area but not as fashionable). Also look at players like Denis O Sullivan (Ballinscarty/Clonakilty), Paudie Kissane (Whitechurch/Clyda Rovers), Brendan Ger O Sullivan (Glengarriff/Adrigole) who want to or have decided to play with more fashionable clubs sometimes a good distance away. There is a big family in Belgooly that play hurling with Ballymartle despite Belgooly having their own team, Newtownshandrum attracted lots of players from neighbouring parishes (some in Limerick and Tipp) to play with them and the list could go on and on...

Lough Rovers and Redmonds have a dwindling playing pool because the demographics in that area have changed. You know the area as you studied there in UCC. There is a large transient student population and a large immigrant population (which may take a while to embed into the GAA) in those areas.

I agree though that people go for fashionable clubs but this is an issue around the country and not limited to urban areas. I know that things can be done to stop this. It is not inevitable as I have seen it happen first hand.

I was down there in late 80s. Tank Field! Moo moo I do remember that team from Mahon - wore maroon I think ? and played in field at bottom of Skehard Road, over looking the water. Nice spot!

True Benny, but you don't need to join a big club to be an intercounty player but it does help. I reckon players like pat hegarty from tadhg mac carthaigh would have been playing all the time for cork if he was playing with a senior club. I think it was the 2004 county final he did wreck in at full forward playing for carbery against bishopstown. noel O'Donovan an emerging cork senior at the time wasn't able to handle him at all. Sean Levis another player that cut the standard from a junior b side in durras. These two players are a testament that good players can come from junior a and b sides.

I think you will agree benny that the gaa are doing nowhere near enough to promote GAA in cork primary schools. also going back to the lough and redmonds etc greenmount and sullivans quay schools contributed far more to the success of the barrs, redmonds and lough rovers than any coaches did at these clubs at underage level and this was down to the dedication of the brothers

Flicking through the thread fairly quickly didn't notice anyone mentioning Mayfield, or Delaneys from Ballyvolane. Maybe I missed them but all anyone needs to do is to Google Cork GAA Clubs and you will get a full list of all Clubs.

Did Roy Keane ever play for Mayfield?

I think he says in his book that he gave hurling a try but it was not for him. It might have been in school. I really do not know.

Denis Irwin was a very good footballer and hurler, as were Simon Zebo and David Meyler (both played with Blackrock)

Keane wouldn't have survived as a hurler. Either skill wise, physically or in terms of sportsmanship.

skillswise who knows if he would have survived he may have/may not have. I think he would
Physically I think he def would and in sportsmanship he would have been fine

Who would Nemo's main football rival be in the City? There seems to be a great number of Hurling rivals in the City with Glen Rovers, Blackrock Na Piarsaigh, Bishopstown and St. Finnbarrs. Football seems a little less competitive, or perhaps i'm wrong.

St. Finnbarr's and Bishopstown would be big rivals. Finnbarrs were runners up in 2009 and 2010. Bishopstown also have lost in a few resent finals. UCC are probably the biggest rival. St. Nicholas have also got a pround tradition as well - Munster Champions in 1967.

Eoin Cadogan's club Douglas are a bad outfit, but they are in the city I guess. Does Millstreet still have a club? My great uncle once played with them in the 60's.
