I couldn't hear what she was saying but she was getting a good reaction from the crowd judging by the smiles and laughs, so am guessing the Cork camóg captain made a good one today.

Personally I thought it was poor, as a lot of individual family members of the captain were thanked which is highly irregular in a team sport. Third speech of the year where the Taoiseach s presence as a guest was ignored too.

Maybe it shows he is not a very good Taoiseach

Replying To slayer:  "Totally agree with this.

They are there to represent their county, their team mates and themselves. They are not there to entertain.

I think every captain deserves respect and to be listened to. It takes 5-6 minutes to listen at the end of a 5 month season.

A but of realism needed here perhaps?"
Yes indeed. The only people, who are likely are not supporters of the winners, on the day anyway, and can leave or switch their TV Station if it all becomes too much for them.

And if I was a winning captain I would ignore the President too. He doesn't represent me personally.

Was just going by the body language.

Would rather cut hand off than vote for current incumbents of either Áras or Taoiseach's office, but protocol and good manners would dictate some mention. The winning captain doesn't elect them :-)

Not for me either.

It always mildly amuses me when people give out about the President and Taoiseach. Yet when both of them arrive before a big game in CP the crowd stand to attention like sheep.

Whether you are a fan of certain politicians or not, we are fortunate in Ireland to live in a democracy, with fair elections used to fill office. Disrespect of our leaders ( intentional or not ) chips away at democracy in my opinion. As I said earlier, they are present as invited guests of the GAA with the purpose of honouring the players by their attendance. I'm sure there's lots of other things they might prefer to do on a Sunday afternoon. Just my opinion but I'm happy to concede I'm in the minority on this.

What would you gain except for bad and needless publicity by inorig president etc
Who does represent you.

if you were a captain who ignored the president or whoever else on that stage you would just get needless bad publicity
i asked in the context of the thread and its relevant to the discussion.
do you think all players agree with politics of most of the dignatories they meet before a game? Hell no. but you dont ignore them or anything else
so who does represent you?

Once a Limerick manis making the speech I really don't care about the content or duration.

The current bunch of gormless politicians certainly don't. As regards bad publicity - that is just outside noise.

So who does represent you then. you keep avoiding the answer. why is that? its not difficult
it isnt outside noise. its completely needless. it wouldnt achieve anything.

I get that all anyone wants is their own county man doing the speech but is there anyone who actually cares what they have to say?

Then switch it off, leave the ground or do something else? Have a cup of tea and a few Jaffa cakes. Walk the dog.

Seriously if people are this bad about a few minutes of talking then everything else in their lives must be perfect :-)

I thought the Kildare captain in the ladies football gave a great speech today. It's not that I wanted to hear what she wanted to say but her and her team mates really enjoyed it. Do people really want to deny her or her team mates this few minutes?

What the bejaysus have we become at all if people speaking offends others.

Replying To tirawleybaron:  "There is a harsh reality to the All Ireland Speech.
The good ones are generally given by exceptional leaders of teams that are breaking a long losing tradition.
Those speeches are full of emotion and are given by a generational player who has led his team from the front.

The reality for the regularly successful counties, is that often they are rotating captain's who aren't even the leader of the team (Kerry, Kilkenny) or aren't all that comfortable with public speaking (Cluxton). Even Limericks captain speech has gone to the dogs now that they have gone from nearly men to yearly men.

The regularly successful teams don't win on emotion, but by being systematic. The speeches are the same.

Speeches should be banned unless your county has had a minimum of 10 years without a win.

God help the Mayo captain that gets to make a speech, he has all the materials to make a speech, it would want to be one for the ages."

Fair point

And some of the people thanked in speeches hardly get a cheer. Why not include the entire support staff (kitmen, water carriers, etc) in one mention?

A former leader said once - if a speech is over 4 minutes duration - forget it.
