Intercounty Player-Manager

(Oldest Posts First)

It's been reported that All Star goalkeeper Raymond Galligan has thrown his hat into the ring for Cavan manager, after being nominated by his club. Used to be a little bit more common in the past, but when was the last time this happened?

Could be interesting how it goes though. The game is so tactical now, that a current player may very well be on the cutting edge. As he's a keeper now, and an outfield player in the past he may have experience both sides of the field, and can possibly manage from goals. Odd, but interesting to see if it happens and how it goes

Tony Hanahoe was playing and managing for Dublin in 1977. Can't think of any other.

Mickey Moran managed Derry in 80/81 or so when still a player. Billy Morgan was with Cork in 81 as well. That's all I can recall, hence it being so rare and not seen in over 40 years maybe

Val Daly was 1997 and retired as a player when he stepped down after losing to Mayo, and O'Mahoney came in.

Val Daly was in 1996/7 league and 1997 championship.
Didn't work out, but paved the way for John O'Mahoney to come in....

Val Daly was the last player manager I could remember. Given the demands on management now I be very skeptical about it.

But as you say he paved the way for John O Mahony to come in ... and the rest is history.

I think JOM is the last manager to win an AI that wasn't from the county he managed?

He won't play however and if he didn't get the job then he won't play either

I wouldn't be too sure that he wouldn't play. Would be interesting what he would do if he didn't get the job though. I still think he has a bit to give, so would be unfortunate if not getting it retires him earlier than expected

Why would he not play if he didn't get the job..? Sounds a bit like the 'dog in the manger' situation to me….

Larry Tompkins, I think, managed the Waterford U21s in the 90s while he was still playing with Cork.

I recall.Daly being around 50 at the time and brought himself out of retirement to play.

Needless to say they won't the all Ireland the next year after he retired again
