The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just starting a thread on the possible havoc that the Corona Virus could have on GAA matches from both scheduling and attendance standpoints. As scheduling is already very tight due to things like weather and club vs county matches, a major pandemic could be ruinous to the 2020 GAA season and beyond. Thoughts?

Just like our luck Trump, when Limerick and Galway have good hurling and football teams respectively. On a more serious note if it comes down to it, like in 1941, games will have to be put off, if public health is at risk.

Panic aside quarantine only works until it doesn't and then it is too late, cat is out of the bag. Just do the simple hygenic things and hopefully it will fade away. But the potential for utter chaos is there there is a growing sense of panic and people make stupid decisions when in fear. I hope level heads prevail but if the supermarket today was anything to go by we are in for difficult few months.

Yeah I guess you're right. I hope it doesn't come to that. But of course the public health is the main thing.

There will be no 2020 championship. End of. Cannot see it. Be very lucky to finish the league but after this weekend, the start of cancelling games. Spread of this virus will only get worse.

Wishful thinking from a Tyrone perspective ; )

In all seriousness though, I can also see it becoming a major issue akin to foot and mouth in 2002. I'm hoping it won't as it would be a very strange summer without any ball but you never know.

Has there ever been a policy of playing matches behind closed doors etc?

What about games going ahead behind closed doors? Additional games shown in full live or deferred on TV as far as is practible?

They're playing matches behind closed doors in Italy this weekend as fae as I know.

But I couldn't see the gaa doing that and missing out on the revenue. So I'd say games would be called off and crammed in some other time.

Well the foot and mouth disease caused huge disruption back in 2001...northern teams were excluded I think.

Nail on the head there.

There was a confirmed case in my city the other day and people are losing their minds, panic hoarding foodstuffs and whatnot. Most people who contract it will get a slightly heavy cold FFS!

That said, if the rugby crowd are cancelling Six Nations' fixtures, then other sports may be instructed by the government to do similar, especially if there are cases confirmed in Ireland.

Who knows, we may end up with a situation similar to the food and mouth outbreak, where the championship gets pushed back to autumn.

Hopefully it won't come to pass!

I'm browned off with that covid 19 by now. It has the potential to affect matches.

I guess they could do it behind closed doors. But realistically if it got bad enough it might even be a danger to players to train in groups.

I mean, to put things in perspective this time last week Italy had 3 cases. Now they're up on 800, 17 dead and a lump in intensive care. The army has full areas locked down and playing Seria a games behind closed doors.

Anything I've read on it, it seems to be fairly resistant to high temperatures too(not that our summer will get them really)

Wait and see job. Best enjoy the weekend fixtures, never know when they will start to cancel them

I think a lot of Irish people are doing the Irish"it will be grand thing".

I never worried over bird flu, swine flu(even though that is technically the same strain the killed 50-100 million back in 1918) Anyway, this is different. You only have to look at the governments of the globe to see that.

If you want to find real official stats on the flu v Covid19 . You can look at the lancet medical journal.

Flu infected 100 people, two go to hospital. None die and roughly 1 in 1000-2000 die.

Covid19 infects 100 people, twenty go to hospital. Three die. Now those 20 will probably develop pneumonia, otherwise they probably wouldn't need to be there. That means oxygen treatment.

A large number of those will need ICU. North and South of the border already has issues with beds. So you could see that 3 easily go to 10/15 in time when you can't treat people with oxygen and that is not an unrealistic possibility.

Add in the fact that most of the pharma companies get their basic ingredients from China, there will come a time when there's shortages for basic drugs for diabetes and BP.

Not to mention it has the possibility to almost stop the total world food supply and turn into back into the stone age.

I think in this case, for once, those going to do big shops are right.

Does anyone know how the virus reacts in different climates? Or does climate have anything at all to do with it?

Given the GAA doesn't have the TV revenue of soccer and rugby and very much the depends on gate receipts to keep the show on the road. Would the Association be in severe financial trouble if there was no championship? Do they have a lot of money committed to Infrastructure projects, loan repayments, GPA etc based on the assumption that there will be an inter county championship each year?

Well, I don't know. I, like countless other fanatics, will go stone mad in the spot, if championship matches are cancelled. It will be a serious Public Health issue indeed.
