The Judas Transfer

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Former Mayo goalkeeper Paddy O'Malley has transferred to neighbours Roscommon. O'Malley is eligible under the GAA's parentage rule something which has been kind to the Rossies in recent years eg. Conor Cox. Anyway isnt this what they call the Judas Transfer in soccer where a player transfers to the selling club's biggest rivals? Can anyone recall any 'Judas Transfers' in the GAA?

I'm not sure Mayo can complain too much about a player transferring to Roscommon when Mayo use one of Roscommon's largest town/clubs for players. I'm sure Roscommon people would have a wee smile at your post.

Dublin - Meath : One of the Lowndes brothers who had been on dublin panels had a brief stint on the meath o'byrne cup panel a few years back. (Family is from Meath and the player himself transfered to Dunboyne). No matter what way you look at it it was a crossing of the divide in a massive rivalry.
Also i remember a lad who played for Ballyboden joining McEntees first meath squad, i dont know what the link was but didnt play much.

Meath-Dublin : Mick Deegans son Michael junior played all his underage football with Donaghmore Ashbourne and at the same time played with underage Dublin panels. I remember him playing for Dublin in u16 and minor against meath teams. It was strange to see Donaghmore Ashbourne represented by both counties. Obviously a difficult one as his dad was a dublin legend but he was rared in meath so i wouldnt have fully agreed with it.
He transferred to Na Fianna a few years back, some say to enhance his chances of making dubs senior team (played a few o'byrne cup games) but never broke into the 1st team squad. The rumors are his dad has taken over as senior manager of Don/Ash this year and that junior is transferring back home. If he is back with Ashbourne he would be a boost for them, very talented forward when on form.

A less high key switch would have been Mickey Brennan playing for Cavan back around 2006-2008.
Mickey was born and bred in Navan and played with simonstown before moving to cavan and playing club football there. he moved back to navan and won 2 senior championships with simonstown.

No, a player transferring between rival soccer clubs is not called Judas. The term arose when Sol Campbell, the Tottenham
captain, transferred to their bitter rivals Arsenal. His contract with Spurs was coming to an end but after months of negotiations and several public assurances he would stay at Spurs, Campbell stated his needed to leave the club in order to play UEFA Champions League football, and despite stating he would never play for Arsenal he signed for them on a free transfer before Spurs new anything about it. The move was also unusual as no rumours of a move to Arsenal had been leaked or speculated upon in the media before the press conference revealing his decision. Several players have transferred between Arsenal and Tottenham (and between other rival clubs) and never been called Judas. Pat Jennings being a prime example.

Alan Byrne's transfer from Bohs to Rovers and Glen Crowe!s from Bohs to Shels were real heartbreakers.

But on the GAA front Vinnie Murphy's defection to Kerry hurling in the 90s was a good one although harmless as it had no impact on the inter county rivalry.

Mayo's biggest rivals are Dublin, Kerry, Galway and Donegal. If you're talking locally it's Galway only.

Looks like Conor Bradley is going the opposite way. He's transferred from Ramor to Dunboyne.

Well Roscommon did steal that section of Mayo. Also Ballaghadereen chose to stay Mayo. So your point is kinda mute.

If a player is goodenough to play for a county & its allowed under the rules, & not getting playing time with his own county why would you call him a Judas. Espically a goalkeeper, theres just 2 on each team

Judas is such a terrible label on anyone. I don't know the backstory to this....and I can't underatand why he would want to play for another county but maybe he was he told he wouldn't be in horans plan and really wants to play inter county....

Anyway best of luck to the lad just not when he is playing his native Mayo.
