I see Paudie Clifford (David's brother) has been called into the Kerry squad and another story today that the two Kingstons have quit in Laois. The days of three or four brothers on a team seem to be dying out. DryEye84 (Cavan) - Posts: 10 - 05/12/2019 17:21:15 2253425 Link 1 |

Think the Spillanes have more medals than the 3 O'Sés, open to correction tho. While we're on the topic, 5 Meehan brothers lined out against the 3 O'Sé lads when Caltra beat An Gaelteach in the Club All Ireland back in the 2004. Only 1 of Caltra's points that day came from someone who wasn't a Meehan. Darragh O'Sé gave one of the greatest exhibitions of high fielding I've ever seen that day and still ended up on the losing side. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5012 - 05/12/2019 18:24:54 2253439 Link 3 |
For the Dubs it probably has to be the Foleys, Lar and Des, who were dual stars. Both lined out in the full back line in 61 when the hurlers were pipped by Tipp in the final by a point. Too young to have seen them in the flash myself but the Da tells me that they were legends not only on the great Vinnies teams of the day but also on the Dublin football and hurling teams. In the early 1980s Ballyhale Shamrocks had seven Fennelly brothers playing. johnocarroll17 (Limerick) - Posts: 408 - 05/12/2019 18:37:04 2253442 Link 0 |
Yeah, the Foleys were top-class players in both codes. Des was actually at midfield in the 1961 hurling final against Tipp, and also famously played in both Railway Cup finals ( hurling and football) for Leinster on the same day. I think Jack Lynch may have been the only other player to achieve that distinction but I'm open to correction on that.

Fair play to you for the info. I thought they both play in the full back line. Yes I read that story about the Railway Cup finals before. They were hardy men back then.

Hard not to mention the 5 brannigan boys all starting on the kilcoo senior team who won the Ulster. All 5 are so skilled and passionate about football and their club cant wait to see them in action in January as I feel they can push on. They've tasted the success they've so long craved, now they will want more. Antrimroad (Down) - Posts: 119 - 05/12/2019 19:34:16 2253452 Link 1 |
I was living in Dublin at the time and went to that game, Darragh was unbelievable but his teammates never got going really. That was some Gaeltacht team, possibly one of the most talented club sides ever but I think having so many senior Kerry players oddly worked against them. They never added up to the sum of their parts. Good shout on the Meehans, great footballing family. Declan was an underrated wing back on the Galway side, he was such a weapon going forward. A friend of mine is always taking about the 6 Kealy brothers who played for Dunshaughlin and won a County SFC Title.

The great Sarsfields club hurling team of 1993-1994 had five of the six Cooney brothers, three McGraths, two Kelly's and two Kennys. Greengrass (Louth) - Posts: 6031 - 05/12/2019 23:45:19 2253485 Link 0 |
The recently retired Dessie Mone comes from a family of brothers who have represented Monaghan at different times. I don't recall them all playing together for club or county due to age difference abd emigration. Conor played back in the 90's and Rory had a brief spell at senior level. JP, Fergal and Dessie would have played at the same time though Tim_NicebutDim (Monaghan) - Posts: 347 - 06/12/2019 09:25:27 2253497 Link 0 |

The Connolly's from Galway were among the greats. Once saw a 7 a side game between them and the Fennelly's from Ballyhale. My own county the Whelan's from Portlaw all played for the county, Frankie, Jackie, Mossy (R.I.P.) and Peter. The Walsh's from Ballyduff Mossy (All Star) Richie and Michael. The Quigley's of Wexford would have to be considered among the greats also. Dan, John and Martin were exceptional players. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2660 - 06/12/2019 13:52:28 2253556 Link 0 |
