Devastating Last Minute Misses

Replying To boman11:  "Cillian O'Connor's last minute free kick to level it against Dublin. By no means was that an easy free kick, infact it was an extremely difficult angle never mind the pressure of a last minute kick to level the game. Given the situation and how Mayo had come so close again I have to say I was gutted for him when it hit the post. Normally a very reliable free kick taker and fair play for taking the kick on at that stage of the game but devastating for Mayo as yet again they could get only get so close."
O'Connor's missed free in the 2016 replay was much worse. A far easier kick and pretty much in the last minute of injury time. It was to level the game.

The one you are referring to where he struck the post was in the 2017 final, there was at least 5 minutes left at the time and it was to put Mayo a point up. It was quite a difficult free to be fair to him.

I was just behind that one aswell!
Between Charlie v Donegal
Charlie V Down
Bealo v Meath and
Keith v Meath, a penalty was of no use to us!!
I do remember Charlie eventually scoring one against Meath the year they knocked the Hogan tho !!

On the Johnny Barr one, he actually got in charlies way with the rebound!!!

Sure JC noted it as a miss himself. He sent one over the bar from further out for Port in an AI club final when he was 17!

Each side had twenty wides that day. Much simpler chances were missed on both sides. It is definitely harsh to blame Joe for that long range effort.

Just found that one on Youtube and still looks like Charlie to me on the rebound. I was down the Canal End that day anyway so brutal view. Johnny running in with Charlie, Mick Lyons style.

I stand corrected, it was more like 8 minutes to go.

Aye, more heartbreak for the Dubs after coming so close 3 years on the trot, but ecstasy for Me. That goalie Neil Collins played for our club! The save was never in doubt

Redmond got his medal in the end a year later. A tank of a man and an outstanding freetaker, although there may have been a touch of controversy in the game with Tyrone.... ;)

Derek Savage in the drawn All Ireland Final of 2000, game is all square in injury time, and he's racing through on goal. All he has to do it pop it over the bar, or lay it off, and he hits an extremely weak effort into the hands of Declan O'Keefe.

The 1997 final v Kerry was one of those where everything that could go wrong for Mayo did (although we invented some new ones since!). Mayo had the experience of the previous year and slaughtered Offaly in the semi-final, but in the run into the final lost our FB, one of the half-backs and another replacement defender from a panel of 24, then lost Dermot Flanagan a few minutes after throw-in, our most experienced remaining defender. Maurice Fitz ran amok observed deferentially by the remains of Mayo's defence (which by then included a forward), but you knew Mayo's name was nowhere near the cup when just a couple of points down halfway through the second half a young Ciaran McDonald lined up a 14m free dead straight in front of the goal. When his magical left foot drove it wide the momentum was blown and you knew it was one of those days when the mere 10 minutes of performance needed to snatch victory simply wasn't going to materialise. Kerry won by 3, Maurice's performance (9 points out of Kerry's 13) stood out and some Kerry lads no one ever heard of since and a few who went on to become household names in the years ahead got AI medals. It ended the Kingdom's 11 year famine, kick-starting the basis of a team who'd build further to deliver a long cycle of success the following decade and beyond. It's one of those where had Mac scored the point Mayo might have continued to drive on and won, and Kerry might have struggled during the years after to build the team and the confidence which brought them so much success during the noughties. That win eased the pressure and bought them the breathing space they needed to develop. 2014 has tided them over the same way in recent times. 1997 could have meant a different Mayo over the decades since too. Thin margins... missing a sitter!

Eoin Keating's missed free in the Munster football final 2004, Dara O'Sè managed to jump up and catch before it went over the bar. It would have being our first Munster title in over 100 years if it had gone over.

"slaughtered!?!!? a bit strong a word. i think the ref allowed your corner backs mortimer and flanagan to lets say wrap up offlalys two danger men vinny claffey and peter brady and both were continually fouled from throw in. a questionable display of reffing that day. a diff refs nterpretation and it may have been a diff game.

Some are subtle enough. Maurice Shannon shot against Galway in the 2017 final heading for the net but hit Tommy Ryan and went wide. It would have tied the game. Not taking from Galway who were the better team on the day.

Replying To Ban:  "Like all great sportsmen, Dessie learned from the experience and became better. The following year he helped Westmeath to a Leinster title.

For me, and its a miss of a different kind, but the way the Leinster Football Final of 2010 finished was a devastating as they come!"
The inspirational Paddy Keenan made a brilliant block in the square in the dying seconds of that 2010 final. The ball then bounced up into the hands of a Louth defender who only had to grab it and the game was over. Instead, he fumbled it and the result was Joe Sheridan's try which robbed Louth of the title. Yes, it was a deplorable decision to let the goal stand but it would never have come to that if the Louth defender held on to the bloody ball.

Not really a devastating miss but it was a terrible advertisement for refereeing.
It could have been the start of better times for Meath but instead it was the opposite with the beginning of a downward trend which is only starting to turn around a small bit lately.
The Karma isn't over yet though I'd say.

He drove one over from about five yards further out in the replay in Killarney.

From what I remember, another defender went to catch it at the same time and between them, they fumbled it. It then fell to the bould Joe who launched himself in towards the goal.
I always felt especially sorry for Paddy Keenan after that, as it was an incredible block. One that was definitely worthy of winning a Leinster title for his county after so many years.

Dessie Dolans miss in 2003 all day long.

It was harder to miss than to score. 20 metres out and direct in front of the goal.

However, the weight of the significance on the kick put him off as he alluded to in later years.

I have been to many a game since and have yet to see a wide as bas from a free in any stage of a game.
