Is Cavan Top County In Ireland For Referees..

(Oldest Posts First)

Tomsmith here

As a strong and unyielding supporter of the best team in Cavan and indeed probably in Ulster ie Cavan Gaels I just ask are we the top County in Ulster and indeed Ireland as regards top Referees,
I say that coming from a Club that has suffered in the past on big days with decisions that I would not agree with being made and the outcome was that we/our Club lost some big big games .
Our style of play is far advanced from some of the other clubs and indeed our players do cry out for protection.
B ut on the national front our Referees have a very high impact and I feel we are tops in Ireland.

I'm not sure where to start with this Tom.

Please tell me your taking the mickey here.
Not sure which is funnier, the fact that you think the Gaels are the best team in Cavan and Ulster or the fact you started are thread suggesting we produce good referees.

What have you been smoking

I'd have to agree Tom.

Gaels have been the best team in Cavan for the last 20 years, also the best run club. Dates back to the late 70s/early 80s when the hard work started, producing numerous successful underage teams and then off course senior domination thereafter. There's a few pretenders to the crown, but none have yet lived up to the expectation.

As for referees, Brian Crowe and Noel Mooney are up there with the some of the best referees in the Country, both respected and very highly regarded in GAA circles.

Gaels are run nowadays by people who no nothing about football. I know because I was at school with them years ago and the majority never kicked a ball in their life or were ever at a match.
Yes they had great footballing men involved down through the years but not most of the present crew.

They've got an All-Ireland medalist as manager, they're last manager was an Ulster Medalist, so they're obviously doing something right, so I'm not sure what you mean when you say the people running the club have no clue.

I'm not taking about the players. They are as good as you will get in any club. You know what I mean.

I note a couple of posts on Twitter from players yesterday evening complaining about not getting protection from referee's.

One of them a county player, and showing fairly heavy bruising consistent with sustained abuse throughout the game by the looks of it.

I suppose having non-neutral umpires and linesmen in the league doesn't help the referee's but I have to say that while we have some good ones in the county, we have some very negligent ones as well.

There is a huge inconsistency in what type of ref you are getting at club level from week to week. Some will ref it like a basketball match and others will allow borderline assault and battery..

The standard of referees all over the country is truly shocking but the GAA continue to ignore the problem and instead hand out heavy fines and suspensions to those who complain...

Pat The local Dandy and Sean
Tomsmith here Cavan Gaels supporter who knows his football.
First Pat the local Dandy what you ( and you are probably a snowflake) describe as near an assault would be childs play in comparison to the abuse the men of 1947 took to land our USA all Ireland. Football has revolved over the years to sort of handbag stuff. If any of youse would have heard stories about the Gunner Brady or Ton Doonan these were hard men. Go to the Imperial any night after a Cavan Gaels victory and you will hear great stories and indeed most are true about great Gaels teams of the past. As for you Sean did you ever Referee. Would you do a line for your local Club. Would you do an umpire for a club game. I bet the answer id naw I would not be able or I never done that. Well I can say this about referees ( coming from a club that is crying out for protection for our light footballers)... We have the best in Ireland and indeed while a few decisions went against us in finals I feel the standard os very good here. But I will discuss it after a Gaels match in im
perial

More great refereeing at the weekend... players taking any amount of steps ( one player took 16 ) before scoring... players hopping the ball twice and running around with one hand up all the time... Can these idiots get any worse I wonder.....?

Sean a Cara

I feel that you dont understand what pressure Referees are under.
Look at the Cavan Gaels young fellows all light weights and them playing against older slower men.
What is the Referee to do sure he wants to let the game flow and the poor Gaels fellows generally take a battery.
While in the past Cavan Gaels have lost a few County Senior Championship titles because the poor Referee may not have seen what happened first but the poor Gaels players got caught retaliating and paid the price for it.
But as I always say the Referee is human

Refereeing is good apart from when the referees make mistakes that are the reason for Gaels losing County finals.

Trying to run with the fox and chase with the hound there Tom.

Also, when you are talking about your "light footballers", do you mean light in weight? or light in scoring power?

Being the man who unearthed David Givney, I think your powers of discovery might now be needed again for your own local club to find another able big man in and around the square to act as a foil for your small men in the coming years.

Let's hope this man can be a county star.
