New Format For Liam MacCarthy Cup

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'd like to retain provincial championship on a knock out basis and then have seeded groups of 16 teams 4 x 4 in the all Ireland championship.
Like below even spread where possible based on rankings from previous year.

Tipp Wexford Cork Antrim

Kilkenny Waterford Laois Kerry

Galway Clare Carlow Offaly

Limerick Dublin Westmeath Meath

Only group winners progress and play quarter final to decide who meets the provincial winners in semi finals.

Where a team wins their group and provincial title the spot should go to the next best placed team who finished runners up.

Every team is still garanteeed 4 games as play 3 in group stage and 1 in their provicial championship.

I'd like to see the league short and no craic of quarter finals etc a league is a league team with most points wins.

MUNSTER
Tipperary
Limerick
Cork
Clare
Waterford

LEINSTER
Kilkenny
Wexford
Dublin
Galway
Carlow
Laois or Westmeath

McDONAGH
Laois or Westmeath
Antrim
Kerry
Offaly
Meath
Down

RING
Derry
Roscommon
Wicklow
Kildare
London
Sligo or Armagh"
Yes - we previously had 16 teams eligible for the McCarthy Cup in a given year (incl 6 in McD Cup). I like your idea of having one 6-team Prov (Lein or Muns) and the 6th team next year gets replaced by the McD Champ.

Only one team outside the top 9 can join and then it's only for a year.

Counties like Carlow, Kerry, Westmeath, Leix and Antrim need to be playing the top teams for years to get to the higher level.

I think the future is 12 teams made up of 2 provinces of 6 counties.

Gives 3 of the mcdonagh counties an extended chance playing the top counties."
Didnt Antrim Laois and Offaly have loads a cracks at the top teams up until 2 years ago. Westmeath had plenty toodidnt do any of them much good.

We had 12 team or more AI loads a times up until 2 years ago and it changed nothing.

Money and forward planning will help but as we see in pretty much all non transfer based team sports the top tend to stay at the top.

Success for Offaly hurlers or the Greek soccer team or whoever else from outside the elite is rare. So rare I cant even think of other examples.

And BTW I also support Limerick football and soccer and both London GAA codes so Im not just all about protecting the elite

i can guarantee you that all it will take is for a few hidings for questions to be asked about structure, realistic ambition, etc"
Hurling is perfect right now.Just look at this year's fantastic Leinster championship, the crowds in Munster and the great competitive matches in Joe Mcdonagh. What is needed is to get the tier 2 and 3 teams who want to improve more investment. I would say Nick Rackard and Lory Meagher teams need to be consulted do they really want to improve their hurling and challenge football or are they happy. The Joe Mcdonagh teams are enjoying a great competition who would have imagined that no matter how much they had fallen Offaly would not win a point in this competition. The standard is getting higher and higher give it time and investment.

If it was your money where would you invest it, that is the question?
Do you invest it in keeping 32 counties playing hurling,
Do you spend it in counties where there are big playing numbers OR
Do you spend it in places such as Carlow/Laois/Westmeath where the management team has turned the county into a very good team.

Why not all three?

Thanks for your support! I just need to get some high profile hurling personality to support it! ;)
