It was a great comeback from Meath that day. I was at all Down's championship games that year but I couldn't get a ticket for the final so I was watching it on tv. Down were really hanging on in the end it was getting really nervous. I remember Mickey Linden had a great goal chance to put paid to the Meath come back but he missed it. Paddy O'Rourke said he always thought Down were going to win but he was a bit worried after Linden missed that goal chance. That was a brilliant Meath team. I remember Bernard Flynn saying they were devastated to lose that All Ireland.

Were there any standout Meath players from between 88 and 96, that missed out on an All Ireland? So many of the winners were household names at the time.

The real shame is you don't see that many comebacks in football anymore. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1126 - 25/05/2019 02:29:16 2187229 Link 1 |
One recent one from football was Westmeath's incredible comeback against Meath a few years ago. They were being absolutely torn apart in the first half, but completely flipped the game on its head. I think it was a 12 or 13 point turnaround. The definition of a game of two halves.

Yes indeed, I remember saying to myself at the time, if there was another 5 mins injury time Meath would have won.

The nature of Wexford's comeback in the 1956 league final persuaded Tipperary captain Tony Wall to play into a gale force wind against Waterford in the Munster Championship in 1959. At half time, Waterford led 8-2 to 0-0! The final score was 9-4 to 3-4.

I must be getting old, as I remember the day clearly- well the 1959 one and all the matches Waterford played that year. Like Limerick last year and Clare in '97 they beat Cork Tipp and Kilkenny on the way to outright victory.

Limerick V Offaly was '94 and '96 (Wexford) was a worse defeat for us

Kilkenny's Carrickshock coming from WAY back, having been hurled off the pitch by Celbridge, to win the Intermediate Club All-Ireland Final. 1st time I really felt bad for the team I was rooting against. I like underdogs and even as a KK fan, Celbridge had nearly one me over. Had to be absolutely heartbreaking. Was thrilled for R. Power though as he'd been forced to retire prematurely not long before this game. Gowran_Yank (Kilkenny) - Posts: 96 - 30/05/2019 13:49:01 2189103 Link 0 |

I think you will find that it was the Leinster IHC Final.

You are right. A pity Limerick and Wexford did not each win provincial title in that decade. Remember Wexford played in three or Leinster Finals in the fifties as well.

While a fantastic performance by Wexford that day (particularly forde) one of those points was a good two foot if not more wide and was given as the umpire was unsighted.

There were a few lads from our local club on the team in the late 40s. Coincided with the only really successful period in the clubs history. Won a few Wexford Senior titles.

Still hard to beat the Offaly Limerick All Ireland hurling Final back in the late 90s I think, Offaly down by 5 or 6 points near the end of the game and in injury time they scored I think 2-02 to win Liam, after that heartache it was 2018 before Limerick finally got rid of those demons, if only Mayo could do the same we all (Mayo people) could rest in peace riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 31/05/2019 15:04:02 2189432 Link 0 |
They were eight points down to KK in the Leinster Semi Final and they turned it around and went fifteen points up at one stage and won by eight. If that Offaly team were more spartan they would have absolutely dominated the nineties. Sad to see them gone so low now. And yes- everyone hopes Mayo will eventually capture Sam
