Joanne Cantwell

I mean I don't have any insider info or anything but I like both Joanne Cantwell and Daragh Maloney. Daragh has the football gig and Joanne has the GAA one. I don't see the problem here? Both are fully deserving or their positions and I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that may feel aggrieved so I don't understand why there should be a question mark over her appointment.

Fixed that for ya...... ;-)

So, if not Joanne, which female should have got the job?

Not gone on her I'm afraid. Trying to be too clever sometimes and tends to need to have something to say at every opportunity.
When she was on sideline duty she didn't seem to have any real empathy with the managers or players.
Maybe she'll grow on me in her new role but I wouldn't be a fan at the moment.

The presenters job is to ask questions of the people who know what they are talking about.
All they have to do is facilitate the conversation.
Presenters have never played the game so their opinion doesn't really count their job is to get a good debate going and to control it.

Delighted she has the job. I think she has room for improvement, but I've no doubt she will mold into an excellent presented.

And of course, worst of all, she's a Dub :D

She is a good presenter but Brolly, and others try to run the show with their toxic nonsense. Guest analysts like Tom Parsons, Michael Meehan etc bring have much to offer from the players perspective. I wish Joanne well. How about more female analysts?

She proved herself as a very capable tv reporter/correspondent prior to this, but I'm not sure yet about her as the anchor for League Sunday/Sunday Game. I'll give her more time, personally I would have preferred Des Cahill who did a really great balanced job over the last number of years, but no harm giving her a shot.

Why more females?

Lots of reasons, it would be a thread in itself....
I found that listening to women guests on the Sunday game, like Mags D"arcy etc had constructive criticisms...anyway my wife and daughters also think that RTE could have more female analysts...parity of esteem etc We live in a Republic

I hate some of the attitudes that crop up on these types of threads.

There's always some low level insinuation that a woman on a sports program has been given their role at the expense of a man simply as part of some sort of lefty, pc agenda.

Joanne Cantwell was a strong reporter for years. She's knowledgeable in the game. My opinion would be that she's a heck of a lot more natural in front of a camera than Des Cahill.

Daragh Maloney has the soccer gig, I don't think some of you realize how big a job some of these roles can be putting together a coherent show on live action, it's tough work.

I like Michael Lyster, he comes across as a good, genuine man but as a presenter for a long time he allowed the pundits to go totally unchecked. I really think it'll help the product to keep Brolly in particular on a tighter leash.

Although I also agree there should just be more of the action shown.

To anyone who says why should there be more women, I say why shouldn't there be. They have as much of an interest and place in sport and sports journalism as men.

There are many more men currently employed on RTÉ sports shows than women. Why is that the case?

I answered suckvalley last night but admin chose not to print. Basically I said I prefer men talking when it's about the mens game but thst I'm probably old fashioned in that regard.
And whammy chill out there, it was a fair and honest question.

Better get used to this, watch Ryan Tubridy's replacement, sooner rather than later, but that's for another day and a different thread.
