The RTE sports awards are on next weekend. Will there be any GAA winners. I hope Jim Gavin gets manager of the year. But given the way RTE sports are run- probably not. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2522 - 10/12/2018 11:36:39 2153848 Link 3 |
I would be very surprised if Jim Gavin gets it. Imagine it'll be either Joe Schmidt or ladies hockey manager.

I think Shaw is a more deserving winner in 2018 than Schmidt who will probably win it. I'd pick John Kiely over any other manager in 2018. Johnny Sexton looks nailed on for personality of the year. She has no chance but would like to see Kellie Harrington win for a great 2018. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7373 - 10/12/2018 14:43:31 2153876 Link 3 |
Dont see the need for potshot at RTE in OP(but given the OP its no surprise....) DonaldDuck (Tipperary) - Posts: 544 - 10/12/2018 15:03:25 2153880 Link 0 |
Team of the year? Mullinalachta should get it without a shadow of doubt. Only in time will their achievement be recognised. A once in a lifetime scenario. Manager of the year between John Kiely and hockey coach Shaw. hamstring (Limerick) - Posts: 318 - 10/12/2018 19:28:11 2153918 Link 1 |
Only insecure people will be having a potshot at rugby and using names, that vast majority of rugby people dont use for the sport, to have a go at the sport DonaldDuck (Tipperary) - Posts: 544 - 10/12/2018 19:51:28 2153922 Link 2 |
mullinaghta will not win team of the yea. the hockey team has that sewn up . they should win an award for their achievement but r t e wont recognise them . personality of the year should be joe schmidt mickcunningham (Westmeath) - Posts: 1806 - 10/12/2018 21:13:15 2153927 Link 0 |

Rugby teams/players tend to dominate these awards if they've had an anyway half decent year and seeing as, by all accounts, they've had a great year you'd have to expect them to dominate the awards this year. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13718 - 10/12/2018 21:42:35 2153933 Link 4 |

Yeah Argentina and USA are hardly world beaters Although the game against the All Blacks was a fully competitive game. I'd agree JS should get it. It was an excellent 2018 for Irish rugby and he's probably regarded as the best rugby coach in the world at the moment Gavin in my view is undoubtedly the best GAA manager currently floating about and his achievements once again in 2018 is testament to that.. ANOTHER treble winning season, Leinster record, greatest unbeaten run championship record, 6th AI in a single decade, 4 in a row.. all achieved in 2018 jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20601 - 11/12/2018 09:35:50 2153954 Link 4 |
Schmidt will get manager of the year. Sexton will get sportsperson of the year, and either Irish rugby team or the womens hockey team will get team of the year. Id be inclined to go with the hockey team. I can't see there being any GAA winners, unless its some lifetime achievement award or something like that. 890202 (Wexford) - Posts: 1278 - 11/12/2018 09:57:27 2153959 Link 0 |
I'm all for the Women's Hockey team to be honest. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 11/12/2018 11:25:26 2153968 Link 4 |
A lot of Irish people look down on the GAA when it comes to these awards because it doesn't have an international dimension. It's an Irish thing. Could you imagine the aussies being so dismissive of the AFL or the Americans of American football? Not in a million years. tomhealycork (Cork) - Posts: 80 - 11/12/2018 12:00:16 2153973 Link 0 |
Jim Gavin is going for 5 in a row next year, and so are the Dubs Gaelic football team. Surely that is a great achievement for amateur players. Regarding having a go at RTE and other sports, well I have watched and heard GAA being attacked non stop over the last 20 years, especially Gaelic football. Have you read what has been said about our great game in some of the sports media? galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2522 - 11/12/2018 12:32:13 2153978 Link 2 |

It is a great achievement. Its not been done before (the 5 in a row at senior level) and only 2 teams managed the 4 in a row before Dublin if im not mistaken. Having said all that, I know a lot of people take these awards mad seriously and each to their own, From my own personal perspective, I honestly don't care who win awards like these. Its an added bonus for those that do, But im sure anyone involved in the Dublin panel, mgmt. backroom team etc wont be overly fussed if they didn't win it and to be honest, I think most of the sportspeople that are up for awards aren't overly fussed either. Fans of teams seem to have this notion that the world is against them if they don't win these types of awards, I already see a few lines about Rugby favouritism and all that gear, I don't understand why it grates on people so much, Youll never please everyone, If Jim Gavin and Dublin win manager/team of the year you will have Rugby fans vilifying RTE for not giving IRFU coach Joe Schmidt (Sorry if I spelt his name wrong) the award, Hockey people lambasting the fact Shaw didn't get manager of the year Or The Dundalk manager whos named escapes me etc.. With these awards you cant please everyone. But that all said, You may win the awards but do they really matter ? I mean, Everyone will remember this Dublin team in 40 years time, and those who weren't around will hear the stories of them, the records they've broken, the strength of their panels, and those who didn't witness it will hear the stories, in the same way I heard the stories of great Kerry teams way before my time, Ask most people to name who won the RTE manager of the year away in 2005 and will people remember ? Probably not. This Dublin team are special, The current Irish rugby group are immense, The Dundalk footballers have won a few FAI leagues on the bounce now, And the hockey team reaching a WC final is an unreal achievement, all brilliant and stand out In their own right, but they cant all win. As a Dublin fan, Im desperate for Sam next year. Desperate. I want this team to officially do what has never been done. Im certain the panel of lads will want that too, But whether we do or we don't, I appreciate their brilliance whether they win it or not and if the people in RTE don't recognise it, That's fine. I do. I have the memories of watching every game of their 36 game unbeaten run, Ive watched players at their peak like Connolly, the brogans, the mecurial Brian Fenton, Stephen Cluxton, And to me, I don't need RTE to award Dublin a team of the year award or Jim gavin a manager of the year award to appreciate how brilliant we have been, And most GAA people in years to come when Dublin aren't winning as much, will look back and appreciate it too even if they aren't too keen to now. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 11/12/2018 13:45:28 2153988 Link 4 |
Surely there must be an 'award' of some kind for John Delaney although other minority sports will probably claim the major awards. Don' think it will worry Dublin footballers or Limerick hurlers too much. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 11/12/2018 16:11:04 2153998 Link 0 |
John Kiely deserves it more in 2018. Jim Gavin next year when Dublin win five in a row. What have RTE and other sports got to do with anti-GAA stories?

the reason is because for three out of the four games Ireland played understrength teams! the Italy and USA games saw Ireland field practically completely different teams to the game v New Zealand. They are glorified challenge games a chance to give lesser lights a run. Usually you get one big southern hemisphere team who decide to give Ireland, Wales and Scotland a match once every few years whilst most years they all go play the Motherland England at the spiritual homeland of Twickers! I would hold off giving Schmidt the title this year I think the hockey coach deserves it, firstly getting to the finals was an achievement and then getting them to the final was amazing, ok in the knockout stages they may not have beaten the top teams but they did so in the group, also Ireland most revered success on the international stage Italia 90... we didn't actually win one game and Jack Charlton has practically gotten a saint hood out of that.
