Club Championships

With club championships underway across the country it'd be interesting to see how people think they'll go in their respective counties. In Donegal I think Gaoth Dobhair are looking good. They recently won the Div1 league and they have a formidable squad. The three McGees, Kevin Cassidy is still there, MacNíallais, plus the younger county men like O'Baoíll, Mulligan, Gillespie and Carroll. They have a tough group (Glenties, Eunans and Dungloe) but if they can emerge from that they'll fancy their chances.

Crossmaglen Rangers are stumbling and struggling.
Scraped home by 1 point in the last 2 games. Beat Silverbridge and Madden.
We led Madden 11 points at halftime to be pegged back and lucky to hold on.
Not looking good for Cross. Can't see us going far.
The fear of God we put in teams long ago is gone.

Scotstown and Ballybay meet this weekend in a heavyweight clash in Monaghan, title favourites v top challengers with a back door to fall back on. Expect Beggan et al to get the job done. Clontibret with county men back should account for Blayney. Carrickmacross meet Magheracloone in a tasty knockout local derby. The town team have been going well but there's nobody like the Mitchels to take a team down peg or two.

In Longford with Killoe already out it looks like Mullinaghta will do a 3 in a row. Unreal achievement from a tiny club. Lomans look the best again in Westmeath, although there seems to be a bit of a revival for Garrycastle. Roscommon is very hard to read at the moment , important weekend coming up.

Contenders in Galway are Moycullen, Moylough-Mountbellew and Annaghdown but you can't look past Corofin. They are going for 6 in a row. In the last ten years they have won 8 titles, a few Connachts and two All Irelands and then last weekend they added the All Ireland 7's title with a very young team including two players just out of minor.

The usual suspects in Dublin.

Ballymun have the best squad in Dublin but have suffered in recent years having so many players away with the Dubs. Vinnies will be there out thereabouts even if (not really sure) Connolly continues his absence. With him they've the best chance imo as they've a settled team that knows how to win, without him they may just lack that X factor.

Crokes have a good squad as well and will be hard beaten. Judes, Castleknock are other hard to beat teams but lack enough of a squad to actually win the whole thing imo. Boden, although recent All-Ireland champs are not going to win the title this year.

A lot of talk about Raheny as well. Beyond the obvious two I don't know many of them but by all accounts they're decent.

For me I'll go for the Munners to get over the line again and have a serious go at Patrick's Day.

The worrying thing for the rest their not getting any weaker. They've got 3 players the wrong side of 30 in Sice, Fitzy & McGrath but there isn't too many of the rest anywhere near 30. Every Galway underage panel always has at least 3 players from Corofin.

Would love to see Ballymun give it a good rattle this year.

I revised my view, Moycullen very disappointing in their defeat this evening to Milltown. Very disappointing from them with the players they have, Kelly, Cooke, Bradshaw, Whynn and Conneelly. Nowhere near winning Frank Fox.

In the Wee County wee are at the quarter-final stage in which these matches are being played next weekend. The Newtown Blues who are the holders and the most successful club in Louth with 21 titles are hot favourites to retain their title. The Blues have not done back to back titles since 2000/2001. With the remaining seven teams left, three of these have never won the senior championship before so the Blues have more titles than the other seven clubs put together. It would be a major shock if the Blues don't win it.

In Mayo, Castlebar Mitchels look very strong this year and it would be a big surprise if they don't retain their crown.

Having watched Ballintubber earlier today I think they're best placed to challenge. Breaffy won't be far away but are maybe lacking a couple of natural forwards.

Westport and Claremorris have some exciting young players but I don't see them winning the championship outright.

A big win for Gaoth Dobhair today in Letterkenny against Eunans. Defensively very solid. Kept Eunans to 2 pointed frees in the second half.
They'll qualify from their group now as they'll easily dispatch Dungloe no matter how the Glenties match goes. No surprises in the other games really with St Michael's, Glenties and Kilcar all winning.

Football Championship down to the last 4 at Senior level. St Galls play Portglenone in one of the semi's and probably should come through that where they will meet the winners of Cargin and Lámh Dhearg which is a lot harder a game to try and call.

The Senior Hurling Championship is currently at the Group Stages with the last round of fixtures to be played this weekend to decide who make up the Semis. Dunloy are already through their group with the winners having played/won their 2 games already and will be joined by the winners from the Cushendall/Sarsfields game which, barring an upset, should be Cushendall. Loughgiel are also already in the semi having played and won their two games and again the winner of the St Johns/Rossa game will progress also to the semi - with St Johns likely to be that team.

While they are a rival club of mine I think special mention should go to Garrymore. A small rural club that consistently get to the quarters and while o don't see them winning it, they are capable of taking out a big hitter or two.

Mid west radio claimed yesterday it was a shock that they beat Knockmore but I had them as favorites. Great club.

Crossmaglen 4-15 Clann Eireann 0-8. Cross find a bit of form to advance to quarter finals with 3 wins from 3 in group stages. Armagh Championship moves to knockout stages.
Favourites for Armagh Championship are neighbours St. Pats Cullyhanna who've never won the senior, Maghery and Armagh Harps champions of last 2 years. Cross are bookies favourites but I think its reputation moreso than football form.

Fair play you called them all,
Heard the Scotstown v Ballybay wasn't a great game but heard Rory had a big game for Scotstown
Isn't that Carrick out now?
