Replying To gotmilk:  "Eoghan Ban deserves to be there and there could be an argument made for Ryan McHugh too. If McBrearty didn't get injured I think he would have been a shoe in."
Good to see eoin ban recognised. Fab player who can play anywhere. Hopefully donegal play him as an attacking half back next year. He reminds me a bit of jack Mc Caffrey but at the moment he lacks a wee bit of strength.

Replying To BliainanÁir:  "Cluxton is a great 'modern' keeper. It's probably more important to retain possession than anything else. However he has a weakness under a high ball which he shows time and time again, like the Comer goal and against Kerry in the semi 2 years ago. I find that a trait which always holds him back from being the goalie GOAT.

I'm biased but i feel Brody was the best but left the championship early. Beggan a close 2nd."
His display in the 4th round qualifiers against us was superb. Probably not enough games though to rule him in. Likely nomination for all star. I think its between Beggan and Cluxton.

Replying To MesAmis:  "In fairness everything you've said about Cluxton could be said about Beggan too except the injury keeping Cluxton outta one game.

Beggan was, maybe, marginally better than Stephen Cluxton but probably behind Briody if we're honest.

As always with these things people can't see past county loyalty. Both Beggan and Cluxton made mistakes this year but both had great years overall. You're accusing other posters of acting like Cluxton was faultless but you're doing the same thing as regards Beggan, who wasn't faultless either.

I'd have Beggan ahead of Cluxton but only marginally. Having thought about it the case for Briody is the strongest of them all but it'll come down to the 2 bigger names."
I think that is likely, its the fewer games that would hold Brody back. Three will be nominated and it will be hard to call between its gonna be Cluxton or Beggan. I wouldnt complain if any of those three won it. They are all excellent in their position.

Was very surprised they didn't pick Beggan. He seemed a certainty a few weeks ago. I wonder was his brain fart at the end of the semi-final held against him?

Replying To JDF:  "Beggan was instrumental in getting his team to an All Ireland semi final, nobody in the country can kick frees from the distances he can keep and in pressure moments in front of huge crowds."
What he did in the last minute against Tyrone might prevent him getting an all star. That was madness and cost Monaghan the match.

Judging a goalkeeper's merits is a strange one these days.

It's probably in this order.

1. Kickouts
2. Saves
3. Frees (which to my mind shouldn't really come in to play except in a dead heat).
4. The newest evolution of all 'Sweeper Keeper/extra man ala Brody. Again while this adds something new, like free taking, should it be prioritised.

I know 7 years ago we probably found it strange rating goalies on kickouts.

Beggan may get it because of the frees and he operated up to semi final level. If people were fair and took Beggan, Brody and Cluxton as the 3 nominees the only thing holding Brody back is Laois exited in July. Laois would have been beaten by double scores against Monaghan only for him. Why should the 2 other goalies be placed ahead of him solely because they play for better teams who play in August and September?
