GAA BIG HITS

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Kevin McMenamins hit on Peter Crowley in 2016 semi-final was an important moment. Now I know posters from the county formerly known as The Kingdom will question its legality but a lot of the
so called hits already cited were hardly legal either.
To cite a hit on the diminutive Jason Sherlock as proof manliness is too funny.

And how could anybody forget that hit on Mickey Ned OSullivan in 1975 by about 3 Dublin players in the All/Ireland Final. I remember seeing it as a kid and wincing. Got to admit that was plain wrong. I think it could have more or less ended his career. He was a brilliant player .

To me blindside hits - Jayo / Moynihan - or late hits after playing the ball - McDermott / Canavan - where one of the parties didn't even see what was coming don't belong in a discussion like this. This should be where two guys lined other up and went for it - McGee / O'Neill type incident.

I was gonna mention the total blindsided and late off the ball wallop Darren Hughes gave Tiernan McCann that left him sprawling but yea your right random acts of violence don't belong here.

Drew Wylie I think it was against Wexford or Carlow last summer. You could here and feel that shoulder by Drew in stands.

Not a huge hit in terms of the impact, but maybe more because of who it happened to and the nature of it.
I believe it was the 2001 All-Ireland semi, when Meath hammered Kerry.
Graham Geraghty was soloing through and Moynihan came in to challenge him. Geraghty bounced Seamus off him like a child and put him on the ground. I think Meath might have then scored a goal from the attack.
It was more the apparent ease with which he brushed Moynihan off that makes it stand out in my memory. At the time he was one of the toughest and strongest backs in the country.
Geraghty was well able himself of course.

McCarthy put in a monster hit in last year's Dublin championship final. The recipient was blindsided but it was a fair shoulder.

Francis Bellew hit Redmond Barry of Wexford in a quarter final (I think) some years back. Both men were going for a ball that was bouncing between them. Francis got the ball first, but made sure he got the man second!

The Rock's shoulder and then point from about 100 yards out is the most iconic hit in GAA I think. There was another clip of him catching a ball above shefflin, losing his hurl, but still hitting 3 KK men shoulders before winning a free out. Think it was on an ad for a few months too. Shefflin says at the end of the clip "I'm just glad I was behind him!"

I'm not so sure. It's marginal. Looked a bit frontal to me

Fergal Doc was an animal for the big hits. I can remember him levelling Aiden O'Shea no less in a league semi final (2014 maybe?) as well.

Everyone knows of the McGee shoulder on O'Neill that time. But there was a similar incident to that in a Monghan Donegal game in 2016 I think it was. Drew Wylie was on his way to nail Murphy but Murphy saw it coming and ended up putting Wylie down for a seat.

That was on Brian Mullins son who although shook managed to carry on after treatment I think.
With Donegal now I think.

It wasn't 16 I don't think. Fair hit no doubt, two big men , it needed to be precise. Graham just got up and got on with it, typical of him. Never complain.
