GAA BIG HITS

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just watching the 3rd replay between Meath V Dublin. It was very naive football just hoofing it anywhere really. If the first half was played in this day and age people would be calling it puke football.

But anyway that was some hit Colm O'Rourke got in the 4th minute. I also remember our own Stephen Gollogy creaming Mark McHugh in 2013.

Just wondering what's other people's memories of BIG HITS??

2005 All Ireland Semi Final Tyrone & Armagh, Sean Cavanagh and Francie Bellew came full pelt shoulder to shoulder off each other, as the commentator said on the day "you could feel that all the way up on the upper Hogan". It took something to put Francie down and that hit did!

2001 in Thurles the drawn game between Kerry and the Dubs, with about ten minutes to go Jason Sherlock got on the end of a lovely diagonal ball, he stopped turned and Seamus Moynihan was coming like a train from Sherlock's blind side, Moynihan floored him sending him in an actual spin. I've been shouldered by Moynihan and I'm no slouch but this was like an U14 vs a junior b full back - just bang and Sherlock on the ground, still though in fairness to him he still had the ball he just didn't know where he was or what to do with it.

Neil McGee on Stevie O'Neill
Peter Harte vs Mayo a few years ago-was it Boyle or Cunliffe maybe. Big hit.

That incident was a Keith Barr and Eamon Heery sandwich, O'Rourke was the reluctant filling. Heery ran about 15 yards to connect with him while Barr was coming from the other side. O'Rourke was left concussed but this wasn't due to a cheap shot. When Heery connected with him his head sprung up and hit Barr's shoulder. O'Rourke's on record as saying that he remembers nothing of the remainder of that first half. Barr and Heery were like Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks in that Dublin half back line. When they hit you, you stayed down, for your own sake.

Ha, great stuff lads, Sherlock looked like he was clotheslined but lb for lb he was as tough as anyone. Poor old Colm was concussed but had the last laugh when introduced in the closing stages to raise moral and it worked too.
All in all this has to be up there ...

Nasty but very typical of the games between these two great sides, even in exhibition games.

Paudi O'Sé's haymaker on Dinny Allen deserves a mention as does O'Neill's straightner on the bould Mick Lyons, very few have done that and lived to tell the tale. Lucky for him Lyons new the ref was a coming and walked away!

Tom Cunnife, hope I spelled his name correct, versus our own Peter Harte. It was a real bone shattering hit, Petey got his pelvis fractured I believe. Also remember Stephen O' Neil bouncing of Neil Mc Gee one time, although that was just funny.

Imagine posting about hardest hits and putting a hit on Jason Sherlock as one.

The Gollogly McHugh one was more of a 50:50 clash than a big hit (ok maybe 60:40). Gollogly did put a proper hit on big Joe Diver in 2007. Given the size difference in the two players involved it left the commentators puzzled as to what had just happened when the Derry man stayed down.

Owen Lennon's huge fair shoulder on Ronan Flanagan in 2013 sparked a crazy 2 minutes of football that ended with a McManus point (who else?). That ultimately swung the game away from Cavan. The best big hit in recent history was Neil McGee on Stephen O'Neill, executed brilliantly while in possession of the ball. He swallowed it up and just laid off a pass like nothing had happened. A game changer.

Of course the all time great was the time 5 Dublin players had a cut off Mickey Ned.. the good old days when common assault passed for football.

Aye I remember the hit on McHugh, we were poor that day and there's no doubt that rattled us with Mark going off. I remember as well Lacey being hit incredibly late in Croke Park, I think it might have been Mayo in 2012 but not 100% sure.

Stephen O'Neill coming in on Neil McGee for a big hit and bouncing off him still brings a smile to my face

The Rock's hit on that Limerick player is the clip I show to people over here in London when they ask me what hurling is like - it neatly encapsulates the physicality and skill of the game.

This https://www.balls.ie/gaa/hardest-men-gaa-149108 from a couple of years ago has a few of the big hitters in it, including the time Francie Bellew extracted the Teeth of the Mourne from Mickey Linden's jaw: https://youtu.be/-hXMGjgWMVs?t=4m37s

Would it be fair to say Mark Mchugh never really recovered from that famous hit?

That incident has seemed to sour relations with Monaghan for a lot of Donegal fans (more than the result itself), which was a pity because there is always a great atmosphere when the two counties meet.
Donegal got widespread support in Monaghan in 1992 and 2012, and will do again if/when their current crop progress in the championship. It was a brutal clash no doubt, and young mchugh was badly injured, but Gollogly himself took a major head/eye injury himself and his day was done too. Reckless more than malicious.
