Limerick City GAA

For some reason I always thought that Limerick City was all rugby hotbed (and maybe it is) with little to no GAA clubs. However, from being familiarized with Limerick's recent success, it appears that there are many clubs around the city and the local vicinity to the city. Na Piarsaigh, St. Patricks, Old Christians and Claughaun to name a few. With Limerick and Na Piarsaigh's all Ireland success perhaps this will be a real shot in the arm to Limerick City hurling for the future.

Soccer would also be massive around Limerick City from my experience.

Traditionally you're right. Most big clubs like patrickswell, Ahane, Kilmallock, South Liberties etc are satalite villages 10-20 minutes outside the city. Soccer is definitely the dominant city sport, the junior clubs are very successful nationally. Rugby just stands out more for obvious reasons but is huge too.

However, the 'lifting the treaty' program which includes the much vaunted academy set up early this decade, has brought hurling numbers in the city from something like 13% to 57% within 5 years. Don't quote me on those as its off the top of my head but around that.

Also I must say, the relatively young club of Na Piarsigh (1968) and their success has had a massive impact on city hurling. The numbers they have now is frightening. All bodes well for the future but I'm sure has Munster rugby worried!

Limerick City's GAA footprint has grown considerably over the past decade. Na Piarsaigh in Cahirdavin Northside , Monaleen in the East of the City and Mungret which covers Raheen in the West of the city are dominating underage hurling. It took Na Piarsaigh a number of years to crack it at adult level but they now are top dogs and indeed their second team are Intermediate.
Monaleen are now also playing Senior Hurling and Mungret are premier Intermediate looking well placed to go senior soon. The other city Clubs St Patricks have moved up a notch with Gearoid Hegarty featuring winning last years county junior championship. Claughaun & Old Christians are 2 other clubs under pressure but there are signs of some green shoots at underage but operate in a very strong Junior Soccer part of town. Limericks win sunday will help them though.
Ard Scoil Ris and Castletroy schools been in the Harty Cup for the past decade has been a huge help to adjoining clubs in terms of their underage players getting exposure to the highest levels which also feeds into players ended up on Fitzgibbon teams in the 3 third level city colleges.
5 other Senior Hurling clubs Patrickswell, Ballybrown, South Liberties, Murroe & Ahane are all bounding the city so there has never been as many workers or students in the city involved in high level hurling . Dare I say it throw in many hurlers from East clare working and studying in the city your never far from a hurling conversation. The only concern is that many rural clubs are struggling to keep pace and with emigration and closures of services those clubs will be challenged.

Monaleen in the west of the city had 355 Children at their Cul camp this week. Largest ever number in Limerick.

Limerick GAA has divisional boards, South, East, West & City.

The clubs mentioned in this thread (Murroe Boher apart) all play in the City division. That doesn't mean they are in Limerick City itself.

I know Adare are well out west of the city but they seem to have fallen back in the senior hurling ranks.

They seemed to be winning a few SHC titles back in the noughties.

Is the emergence of senior football in the town impacting on the senior hurling?

Bar the great captain Declan Hannon, they don't seem to have any other representation on the panel.

Always like visiting Adare on the way to Kerry, traffic can be at a standstill though by times!

The pitch and village of mungret aren't but to be fair, most of their pick comes from Raheen which is a big suburb.

Don't know about that but looking from the outside in that seems wrong.

A very strong soccer scene with Mervue United and Salthill Devon being excellent clubs as well as Galway United in the LoI.

In fact at one stage Galway had three teams in the LoI!

what was the average attendances at said games tho Mes
Galway from the outside looking in seems a rugby city and thats about it
It pays tuppence homage to GAA but, a bit like Limerick City they are minority games
(for the record, on the topic, GAA is still far from one of Limerick City's "main games"
Far from it
