Tyrone Boycott Of RTE

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If you are going to be in the public eye, on the news, in a high profile or important position, and so on, you expose yourself to people's comments, criticism and attempts at humour. It goes with the territory. I think Mickey Harte and the Tyrone camp are being a bit thin skinned and need to get over it.

Anyway it's just a opinion. I believe Tyrone (if mh doesn't want to that's fine ) should engage with all media, again this is the biggest sport event in a calendar year. And Tyrone should nominate one person or persons to do media, while stating mh will not for his reasons. The blanket ban thing is pointless and disrespectful to the gaa community.
Now regarding the night time show , let's be honest it's highly highly unlikely that it will make a difference anyway as dubs will stroll to another win and we will get Jim r2d2 Gavin given the usual speil

Tyrone are as ungracious off the field as they are divers and cheat on the field. I hope the Dubs give them as roasting

Replying To royaldunne:  "Overstated and incorrect. It's a sort of unban legend now. Totally fake news as Murray personally phoned mh to apologize and what's more mh fully accepted his apology. So for those using this they are wrong."
Why do you even care if Harte or ANY of Tyrone GAA talk to RTE or not, why are you so obsessed with Tyrone GAA right now, are you hurting RD, do you have a longing inside? No one has commented on this more than you have yet you have so little to actually say, what is your issue here?

That's seems to be this narrative where by if someone apologises you automatically have to accept it and everything goes back to normal. John Murray may have apologised, it doesn't mean you have to invite him around for dinner.
Also RTE gave a very statement, I wouldn't call it an apology, that has been highlighted by other posters as well as me. They also released this statement well after the incident which made things worse. There was no unconditional apology. It was a wishy washy piece of crap to be honest, insincere and not worth releasing.
Also, people seem to think that the RTE interviews are the by all and end all. They interview the manager, man of the match and captain for a few minutes at the end of the Sunday game. It isn't a 2 hour extravaganza. And the interviews are normally mundane enough. Mostly thank yous. Tyrone have a great radio broadcaster in Teamtalk Tyrone, im sure they could do the same thing and broadcast it live over the internet if people are that desperate to see a few interviews.

This goes all the way back to the worst piece of RTE crap in history when "RTE's John Murray show in August 2011, mocked him for going to see the Dalai Lama and then included the song Pretty Little Girl from Omagh. This came just months after his daughter Michaela had been murdered on honeymoon in Mauritius." Leave Harte alone, he is entitled to throw all the anger he can muster at RTE, just give him a break.

You are totally wrong on that you need to post up the link. Murray was vile in what he did and no forgivness end of argument.

Replying To Curlew66:  "Good summary Tearsin85 with two important omissions
* Comedy sketch had 'Pretty little girl from Omagh' as a backing track shortly after Mickey Harte's only daughter was murdered on her honeymoon. Hard to believe I know
* Follow up apology by DJ included ' you must have a sense of humour about these things'"
Thanks for the additional info, Curlew66. I've had a listen to the sketch and it is truly in bad taste, and if the 'apology' was as ill-judged as you state, that's another nail in the coffin.

However, further digging today reveals that MH had embarked on his boycott of the broadcaster BEFORE the transmission of the sketch;

https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/mickey-harte-brian-carthy-and-that-fourpage-letter-to-rte-26741449.html

The sketch was broadcast on the 9th of June - MH embarked on his campaign refusing to speak to RTE *before* that date (and from the above article seemed to be seeking support from others in this campaign as well).

There appears to be a degree of revisionism at play here.

Of course, the sketch and faux apology might be enough to cause or cement the attitude and boycott, but it cannot be denied that the root cause was a petty and sordid attempt to interfere in the workings of a broadcaster for the benefit of an aquaintance (nothing new there when it comes to RTE, you might say!!). The sketch came later and undoubtably made matters (much) worse, but it's clear to me that events commenced when MH followed through on the veiled threats of un co-operation contained in what can only be considered an ill-judged letter.

Nothwithstanding the above, I would still have a large degree of sympathy for him. It's a pity that an entire generation of players is denied the kind of exposure they deserve but I can see how it can work to Tyrones advantage as well and they have done their talking on the pitch so what does it really matter in the end?

(I've had the pleasure of meeting Mickey professionally on a couple of occasions and was privlidged to see him analyse game tactics. He's an insightful and knowledgable student of the game and it's everyones loss not to have access to his analysis. Maybe he'll show up on $ky when his Tyrone days are done - might be worth subscribing then!)

Again Tearsin85 your facts are accurate and your views are fair.
Comparisons between the' RTE comedy sketch' and the 'McElduff/Kingsmill tweet' are interesting
In both incidents innocence was pleaded and apologies issued for crass insensitivity for thoughtless actions towards the memories of murdered loved ones. The politician was rightly pilloried by RTE and other media until he resigned but Micky Harte is expected to 'get over it and move on' . I wonder would the media reaction be any different if the offence was against a coach from a higher profile hurling/football coach or a highly paid coach of our rugby/soocer team.
What do people think about this?

Here comes the anti Tyrone Down posters. When you hit the submit button does a small part of you think this is childish and embarrassing for yourself and the many decent Down fans. It's the same few people who do it and most posters know who you are. It only happens when Tyrone are doing well perhaps when you get a Tyrone man in Tally to manage you guys perhaps success will return to Down football!

In fairness everyone should boycott 'Up for the Match', it's worse than the Rose of Tralee. As regards the Tyrone boycott, it's pathetic, and time for Mickey Harte to stop acting like a spoilt child.

I used to feel sorry for you Royal, everyone on the Meath and National forums disliking everything you said, but I can honestly see why they do. You have an awful ability of not listening to what people are saying. Like a kid who sticks his fingers in his ears when he doesn't like been told what to do.

Sorry you are the one who is totally wrong. Vast majority of Tyrone people accept that Murray apologized, it's a known fact. What people seem to have a problem with is that murray did it himself off his own back, and not rte. and said stated the song was played as a Tyrone song and not on his deceased daughter, but that in hindsight it was highly offensive and unsympathetic even if it was never intended to be. Harte accepted this. The problem was that it didn't come from rte directly, instead Murray in a personal phone call.

Meanwhile the offending DJ's other half busy retweeting and then deleting negative comments on MH past 24 hours
So much for an apology .. hasn't the poor man had enough grief to cope with ?

Tweet removed from OP's account this evening (Ronan McGreevy, IT journalist/author) . A critical comment on MH resulting in a dozen other negative remarks. Was amazed she retweeted given the circumstances.
