Tyrone Boycott Of RTE

Replying To tearintom:  "It was a wee bit more than that.

It was as result of the John Murray show doing a comedy sketch about Harte going to see the Dali Lama after his daughters murder which included using the song "the pretty little girl from Omagh"

RTE apologised and removed the sketch immediatley.

I dont blame Tyrone or Mickey Harte one bit and Harte annoys me to be honest but i think hes dead right.

The sketch was just months after his daughters death and Harte had let it be known he was going there to listen to the Dali Lama's teachings on forgiveness etc."
Very important post, many were unaware of the full story,
Similarities to the McElduff/Kingsmill tweet in some ways, both thoughtless to murder of loved ones. both issued apologies, innocence pleaded etc . Some outrage within RTE at the crass Kingmill tweet over 3 days on 4-5 radio programmes until the politician rightly resigned . No sanction on the DJ though, just an apology.

Mickey is hired to coach the team. Tyrone GAA could have nominated any other person to speak to rte if they had wanted to but they haven't so that says it all really. They've kept him about regardless so it's not like they don't know what to expect. I suspect the county board respect Mickey enough to stand behind him.

Probably the most useless comment yet, congrats.

Replying To TearsIn85:  "Isn't it?

From reading up on this today, the sequence of events seems to have been;

* Mickey Harte and several others wrote a 'private and confidential' letter to RTE management calling for some change regarding a commentator
* The letter was leaked (Harte & associates adamant not by them, RTE adamant not by them either)
* John Murray included a very bad taste sketch on his radio programme reacting to the letter contents & leak
* Mickey Harte took umbridge (rightly) to the tone and content of the sketch
* John Murray called Harte directly to apologise
* Harte stopped speaking to RTE

So, in reality, the root cause was the letter (and leaking of same) but the key indescrition seems to have beenthe sketch.

Open to correction here but the above is what I found when actively looking into this today."
Good summary Tearsin85 with two important omissions
* Comedy sketch had 'Pretty little girl from Omagh' as a backing track shortly after Mickey Harte's only daughter was murdered on her honeymoon. Hard to believe I know
* Follow up apology by DJ included ' you must have a sense of humour about these things'

Mickey Harte can still be heard on Newstalk, local radio and seen on Sky, TV3 so we wont be denied his reaction to the AI final. I think Tyrone welcome some ex players on TV panels if only to restore some balance to the personal abuse dished out by TSG pundits. A brief summary would include . 'Puke football',' play like a team with a bad smell and I'll eat my hat if they win an AI with him on board', 'dont talk to me of him as a man' 'Tyrone's manager for life' .. I could go on but the only time I ever heard producer/presenter of TSG withdraw/apologise was when one of their own staff was compared to Cavan football

To answer your question, Yes. What's wrong with that? He's the head of the most senior team in the country, the public face of Tyrone Gaa, the same as O'Rourke is in Monaghan what's the problem? Would Monaghan back O'Rourke? Of course they would! If Mickey jumped in the river O 'Rourke would jump in after him...

When he keeps masterminding beating Monaghan in Croke Park I think it should stay that way

No its not all about Micky Harte . I know he has managed them to AI victories at both minor and U-21s , 3 senior AI's and 6 Ulster titles but the semi final was all about Morgan's restarts, Cavanagh's fielding, runs by McCann, Harte and Donnelly, Sludden's shooting etc

No that's what it started over. The Murray thing was after that. He apologized and micky accepted it.

More backbone than any Tyrone player. How much backbone did peter the average have when john Mac sent him flying???

I'm sure Mickey also knows what it's like to inadvertently make a mistake and insult victims - like his character reference for Ronan McCusker. It's a pity we can't move on but we'll leave it there and look forward to the final."

Replying To ctowers:  "Your correct. Basis is Harte getting annoyed over the letter being leaked , the unfunny sketch with an extremely poor choice of music being portrayed as some some purposefull jibe at mickey hartes family is well overstated."
Overstated and incorrect. It's a sort of unban legend now. Totally fake news as Murray personally phoned mh to apologize and what's more mh fully accepted his apology. So for those using this they are wrong.

I hope Sean Cavanagh enjoys spending his 30 pieces of silver, if he and the other Tyrone ex players had anything about them they'd have stayed a mile clear of Rte, suppose the lure of the bright lights and the few euros was too much to resist for them. Fair play to Mickey Harte.

I think the boycott is great and hope it continues well after Mickey Harte's Tyrone days are over. We hear enough from Tyrone up here every day of the week so I don't need my ears annoyed further on the airwaves!!

Untrue. The football team of then choose to stand by their manager as they all knew michaela very well and were very upset that the National broadcaster of Ireland would use such bad taste for a cheap laugh . Since then all the squads have continued to back Mickie Harte on this issue. He did not order them not to speak to RTÉ. He's made that very clear.

Replying To ctowers:  "Have any of yous actually listened to the sketch. Its about harte meeting the dalai lama . The only reason any notion of his daughter comes up is because of the poor choice of music used. Its unfunny and the music insensitive but certainly not set out to mock him family."
The whole scetch was a jibe at mickey harte and how is it proper for rte to pick on him anyway a private citizen who gives his time to train an amateur team in an amateur organisation outside of dublin anyway. To do these these sketches against celebrities who make money out of fame is fair game to target mickey harte was disgusting. Rte and the dublin media should take a long walk of a short pier.
