With Liam Silke and Cillian Mc Daid returning from abroad for next season as well as the emergence of Kieren Molloy and Paddy Tallys departure i am looking forward already to next season.. Belclare1 (Galway) - Posts: 1626 - 14/08/2018 19:24:07 2133367 Link 0 |
'Unwatchable' yet you watched it

Some points you made certainly have merit in terms of the thread. Anyone who did not enjoy the last two finals from an excitement and intensity perspective i would question. In terms of me as a fan who goes to games I go because i follow our lads through thick and thin. As enjoying watching us yes sometimes I have moments whereby I think we can be much more offensive orientated but then when I go to games watching other teams as a neutral I still see plenty of lateral play and defensive structures. I think the Galway footballers get a bit of a hard time from some Galway folk partly because of the hurlers doing well and the general feeling that hurling is well ahead for entertainment. I go to plenty of hurling games and understand this situation to some degree although don't agree with it. For the record Clare may from your perspective have been uneasy on the eye in '15 and '16 buy certainly play front press hurling now and unlucky not to be the final. Some turnaround. kiloughter (Galway) - Posts: 1947 - 14/08/2018 19:38:28 2133372 Link 0 |
Being honest there are times when I go to matches not involving Galway and as much lateral play and defensive structure as anything we have produced. I follow our boys thick and thin and very few counties for example have a Shane Walsh type of player who can excite the crowd. Maybe he does not do it as often as Michael Donnellan of yesteryear but the current context of the way game has evolved does not help this type of player. Of course at times I would prefer us to be more offensive but the reality of what happened against Tipp in '16 is still biting. One of the reasons Mayo were very effective was a full press half back line (possibly our weakest line currently) but with Liam Silke and Cilian McDaid due back I expect us to have a better box to box type half back line in years to come.

I hope Mayo come roaring back next year. They are the only team that gives Dublin a game. Yet they are probably the one challenger to Dublin's throne who face the most criticism and ridicule. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 14/08/2018 20:45:35 2133386 Link 2 |

I dont think they're poor. 2017 final mayo forwards scored 10 points from play, Dubs scored 1 - 10 from play. Theres not much in that because each set of backs are evenly matched. Like another poster said earlier i think they're lacking a quality inside forward but i wouldn't say they're poor. Cant believe i posted using incorrect grammer, good job there's people like you in the world. Up there on your high horses keeping the rest of us in line. Fairplay buddy. We have a good freetaker and one good forward in his mid 30s. Should be getting more from the other forwards but hard to see their confidence improving when our plan is to give the ball to Andy or win a free for Cillian to convert.

Galway deserved to get to the final, better team over 2 days but we made serious progress which i am happy with. I've been saying for years that we had the hurlers just needed good management and hopefully we can kick on. I think football can be just as entertaining if played more freely, im not against a team having good defensive plans in place but its gone way over the top. Galway have some of the best forwards in the country, thats why i asked if you enjoyed watching them because it must be frustrating. I hope them lads coming back add something new to your arsenal because its a shame not seeing Comer and Walsh cut loose. Dec82 (Clare) - Posts: 242 - 14/08/2018 23:23:42 2133431 Link 0 |

The younger lads like Loftus haven't got a proper look in under Rochford too. I hope he goes and they get someone like McGuinness in who might get them over the line before it's too late.

I never thought I would say it, but I miss them and they are missed both on and off the pitch. So yeah come back all is definitely forgiven

What's a 'proper' look in? Loftus has had a few chances and hasn't really impressed. Maybe that's because the senior team isn't encouraging forwards to take on more shooting chances. Loftus is still young but for me very much a confidence player. Misses two or three chances then drops the head and becomes shot shy. Arguably the settled forwards haven't had much look in either. Cillian, Diarmuid, Jason, Kevin and Aidan are well capable should all be contributing more from play but tactics doesn't seem to allow this. McGuinness won't take the job, prefers a professional soccer coaching job.

Out of interest what have we to be sorry for/been forgiven for?

McGuinness announced on live TV after the the Mayo/Kildare game that the chance of this Mayo team winning an all-ireland was gone. Horan was sitting right beside him .Riveting stuff, in a way!! Jimmy would hardly be cynical enough to take 'the Mayo job', just a few short weeks after announcing their demise to a live, albeit largely subscribed, TV audience. Rockford staying is a huge relief to JD, COC and a couple of others who are hanging on to the jersey. Mayo will be in the Super 8's, as will Galway next season, will be mighty stuff. Mayo forgiven for throwing GPS? Nice gesture. maroondiesel (Mayo) - Posts: 1197 - 15/08/2018 12:39:34 2133556 Link 0 |

Dublin fans pining for Mayo is definitely one of the more patronising things I've read on here. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2224 - 15/08/2018 13:31:34 2133584 Link 1 |
