Thurles Shambles

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Great day to be a Galway fan but there can never again be an all Ireland semi final in Thurles. It was an absolute shambles in terms of event management. Thousands of people still outside the ground 20 minutes into the game. No traffic management plan at all.

Sshh.. All future matches in Páirc Uí Chaoimh need to be diverted to Thurles because it is so easy to get in and out of there

You'd want to be arriving at Semple around an hour before throw in to be sure of getting in on time. Ridiculous.

Obviously you have not driven to Thurles from Galway in the height of tourist season. Its a disastrous venue.

Just about all grounds struggle with 40k+ supporters showing up at once.
Even Croker can be a disaster for a fan who isn't prepared.

But one of the greatest things about the GAA is the banter and commerardery between fans. Get there a couple of hours early and enjoy the craic in the build up to the game.

I doubt any of your theories will be published in science journals.
Thurles is notoriously difficult to access or leave on match days before you get anywhere near the ground.

This is not really about Thurles, this is about the Games Admin Dept in the GAA & how it's run or not run as in this year. An All Ireland hurling semi final should have preference in Croke Park over a Super 8 dead rubber game, but the GAA continue to show preference to the Dubs. Only 34,000 in Croke Park y'day when over 54,000 were there for the All Ireland hurling semi final. To rub GAA members noses in it they didn't distribute the tickets for the replay through the counties so if you didn't get online on time you lost out. The excuse about distributing them in a week was too short doesn't stand up considering there is a precedent for same. Add in how this Dept were shown up when there was no health & safety issues, traffic issues or crowd violence as predicted at the Newbridge game. Also how they moved Wicklow out of Aughrim to accommodate the Dublin season ticket holders & Parnell pass holders. Add in games brought to PUC to appease the powers down there even though counties weren't happy & fans voted with their feet with only 10,000 showing up. Div 4 as highlighted by Tom Mc Glinchey this year was a disgrace where games weren't even played, a blow to players, fans with season tickets & sponsors. Donegal made come to play in Croke Park for a 7pm throw in & then drive home, who was the genius that thought of this time. This is a Dept with highly paid officials, with huge logistical & financial back up yet its run very badly. Time for a massive shake up, but as we all know the GAA insiders will plough on & no reform or action will ever be taken. The proof of what a balls they made of everything this year is there to be seen

How many All Ireland semi finals are played in Salthill?

I always travel the night before getting a nice hotel or B & B and enjoy the occasion! Life is too short to be rushing around. Spend that money folk, can't take it with you...lol

Thurles is and always will be absolute nightmare to get in and out of.

It's an all Ireland semi final that deserves a Croke Park game.

The game being fixed for Thurles had nothing to do with the Dubs. Could have easily been played Bank Holiday Monday in Croker.

It should have been and understand your frustration but they were going to change the U20 Football Final and the last Super 8 game that had been fixed for awhile.

Salthill- easily accessible- no indeed it is not. I drove to the Limerick/ Galway league game in April and it took about an hour and a half to get from the pitch to the motorway. I would hate to be trying to get out of there if there was a capacity crowd there.

Poor Dubs they simply cannot win, if the hurling went ahead in Croker people would be moaning about the travel, the fact it should be held in Semple home of hurling etc etc etc We've had a whole year of belly aching over venues. BUT I do think the Hurling should have been in Croke Park.

Get out of bed earlier and arrive earlier at the venue. It was a 2pm throw in and I believe Munster GAA and the Gardai released a notice saying to arrive early and those who didn't were left outside.
Thurles has held many Munster finals and a few replayed all Ireland semis in 98 and 2016. If people followed the direction given and where they can park and how to park it makes less problems for everyone.
Every city or town which hosts big games will have some issues not everyone will be happy but please don't state there was no traffic management plan when their clearly was.
The game should have been played in Croker and Dubs v Roscommon up the country somewhere like Cavan or Tullamore.
Or even play the dead rubber in Croker today Bank holiday Monday.

turn on your sarcasm detector there oldtourman.....a kilkenny mam told me it was the worst ground he ever tried to get out of earlier this year.
what did people expect.if they had played it in Croke park today there would have been moaning, they could hardly be expected to move a match fixed weeks ago out of croker?
croke park is hardly a drive up and park at the gate experience.......

Perfect 10 for your reply perfect10.

People starting threads such as this complaining really are showing themselves up as do do's. Nothing more to be said.
