Great win for Carlow today Blackbog (Carlow) - Posts: 705 - 01/07/2018 15:33:06 2117219 Link 0 |
Well done Carlow, the under age effort over the past 15 - 20 years is really showing. Good luck also in the preliminary quarter final. I also think that a team that is promoted to the Liam McCarthy proper should be given 3 years in it to try and consolidate their position. With a return to the Joe McDonagh Cup at the county's own discretion only before the 3 years are up. This may not suit the suits at HQ but if they think about it a 6 team Leinster or Munster Championship would not be the end of the world and at least all teams would have games at equal intervals unlike the 5 team set-up where there is a distinct advantage for the teams who have the bye in round 3. It would be in Carlow's interest to bring a motion to Congress requesting the above change. MillerX (Meath) - Posts: 1066 - 01/07/2018 15:56:36 2117231 Link 0 |
Fair dues to Carlow, it just goes to show that there is more to life than winning Sam or Liam. MuckrossHead (Donegal) - Posts: 5028 - 01/07/2018 15:59:31 2117237 Link 1 |
That must be the most nonsensical championship format yet, which is saying something considering there's dozens of them posted every day here. You wouldn't have a 6 team Leinster championship, you'd have an 8 team Leinster championship after filling it with unrelegatable Joe McDonagh cup winners. Unless you're saying you only promote the J McD winner once every 3 years? Or that you continue with relegation, and only relegate the lowest finishing "core" team in Leinster even if they finish 5th out of 6/7/8 teams? Congratulations to our Rivals Carlow who were magnificent winners of the inuugural Joe Mcdonagh cup. We could have had that goal at the end of the first half and hit a lot of wides but hats off to ye guys a serious team. Personally I think Carlow will so very well in 1b but the real challenge is in Leinster. THE BEST OF LUCK FROM WESTMEATH jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1462 - 01/07/2018 23:51:38 2117459 Link 1 |
Congratulations to Carlow who are a fine team capable of staying in division 1b and Leinster. Physically Westmeath could not match them its been a disappointing year losing two finals to the Barrowsiders jobber (Westmeath) - Posts: 1462 - 02/07/2018 05:29:43 2117478 Link 0 |

Great Win for Carlow, well done lads, the next match will be a big step up but every hurling fan outside of Limerick and Wexford will be rooting for Carlow and Westmeath. Brian_Coyote (Antrim) - Posts: 346 - 02/07/2018 12:05:42 2117635 Link 1 |
If staying at 5-team groups, they should get rid of that rd 3 bye advantage, you mention. Give a total of 10 byes (2 per team) over 6 weeks (1,3,1,3,1,1).

Thanks jobber. We got the momentum in the competition when it mattered and the win against Laois gave us huge confidence. Would love to see Westmeath up in div1b next year as well. They could have 2 divisions of 7 to give more teams a taste of the top table. Thought yesterday that our full forward line was the difference but the missed goal and goal before half time was huge. Hope Westmeath give Wexford a right rattle as your lads always do in Mullingar. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 02/07/2018 13:31:21 2117693 Link 1 |
Well done to Carlow. Jackie Tyrrell mentioned on the Sunday Game that there is only four senior clubs in the county. Hard to believe. Toney (Meath) - Posts: 298 - 02/07/2018 13:55:08 2117708 Link 2 |

The McDonagh Cup is a good competition. There is a big gap however from McDonagh to provincial championships. People aren't going to be sold a pup. The pre quarter-finals are a good reward for mid tier teams to get a high profile game. Until such a time that the gap is closed, the McDonagh Cup will stay out of the media spotlight. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7888 - 08/07/2018 19:15:24 2119743 Link 0 |
Are Carlow definitely going to be playing in the Leinster Championship next year (and conversely, Offaly playing in the Joe McDonagh cup)? Marlon_JD (Tipperary) - Posts: 1823 - 08/07/2018 21:39:54 2119804 Link 0 |
Yeah, Carlow are in the Leinster Championship next year. The GAA president was insistent on that. Talk of Offaly being the 6th team was quickly quashed. Offaly can prepare for All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-finals next year.

We won the Mcdonagh cup so we go up. We deserve our chance up there. It would suit Carlow if Offaly were allowed stay up as we would have a good chance to beat them. But I think this protect the top 10 at all costs thing has to stop. If Offaly are good enough then they will be back the year after. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 09/07/2018 20:46:11 2120175 Link 0 |
Offaly will have to get past Leix, Westmeath, Antrim and Kerry to get there. Westmeath beat them by 12 points a few years ago so I wouldn't book Croke Park hotel just yet if I was them. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1517 - 09/07/2018 20:53:45 2120181 Link 0 |
