Arlene Foster At The Ulster Final

To be honest, I think it is irrelevant.

Replying To Whammo86:  "No, you're wrong.

I'm not nationalist really, I actually really dislike any form of nationalism in a general sense. Northern Ireland politics is nothing short of tribalism.

The DUP are wrong. In every way imaginable.

They are as right wing as they come. They've a very long and ongoing history of fighting Irish cultural expression.

So do not both sides this. The DUP are an active negative force in the world and their leader is as bad as anyone.

To say otherwise shows a complete ignorance of the situation."
It seems by the amount of red thumbs you're getting (four as I type); that the ignorance you mention, is rife on here.

Well done to Ulster GAA, Dongal, Clones, and Fermanagh for organizing the meeting. Also well done to Michelle O Neill for being on hand to welcome Ms Foster. Finally well done Ms Foster and Mr Salford.

Its a step forward, but I ask the question 'how sincere is the gesture'? When she was pictured meeting members of the Fermanagh team and county board she wore a red outfit, blue blouse and white necklace. Now, hopefully I am reading too much into this but why choose these 3 colours when you are going to meet a GAA team. Bbc news article. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-44509688

I am sorry, but i do not think there is alot of sincerity derp down from Mrs Foster. The DUP have been highly critical of our organisation. This is a political stunt to appease the opposition and say 'here the DUP ate reaching out' and to get stirmint back uo and running. This does not wash with me, there is bigger issues in our society where the DUP and Arlene need to reach out and prove they are willing to respect other cultured etc. Attend a GAA match would be way down my list.

So no, i dont believe todays gesture will go anywhere near restoring devolution to NU.

No. The DUP should never be acceptable.

That has got nothing to do with religion.

That woman, her party and her supporters deserve no respect.

Great to see it but make no mistake this is a 'Outreach gesture' from a politician for whom the tide is slowly slipping out, both in terms of her own position but also the unionist community. Demographic changes and her highly Ill judged support for Brexit mean that she and her party now need to reach out to the catholic unionist cohort to preserve NI. Expect more of this but objectively this is a sudden turnaround from someone who has form as being antagonistic to the other community.

What would it take for reconciliation between the GAA in the north and the dup? What would be an acceptable gesture at reconciliation if today fell short?

I am asking this in the wake of the first minister of NI and the leader of the DUP being in clones and being there for the national anthem. I am sure she stood although I could be corrected on this point. Was she crossing her fingers behind her back?

Personally, I think she has done some wonderful things at reaching out. Her appearance in Clones will mean a lot to those who want to change and move on and probably mean nothing to those who are addicted to the past and bad feeling.

I feel it all the time in Dublin.

People commenting who haven't had to live the DUP just have no clue.

You can read all you want about history, I've lived the DUP. Wally has lived the DUP.

The DUP attend a GAA match in the same way as Trump salutes Kanye West. To legitimize their hateful rethoritic as having legitimate concerns, and that they are reasonable people.

Don't be fooled. They are not. There's a long history of them no being and attendance at a GAA match doesn't matter a dot.

Well you will never know the pain we in the South feel at being constantly bored to tears by every Nationslist and their endless victim boo hooing

There's no gesture that can do it.

If she were to have several years of earnest work at reconciliation things could heal.

People are so easy to be swayed by these sort of simple platitudes.

I'm not a SF supporter.

I haven't voted for them once in my life.

This thread isn't about them.

Every nationalist, like Wolfe Tone, Robert Emmet, Charles Stewart Parnell and countless others who gave their lives so that this country could an independent nation? Shame on you.

They should all meet her again in a few week's time. They can join in the chorus when she's belting out 'The Sash My Father Wore'
