Arlene Foster At The Ulster Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am no big fan of Arlene or the DUP but I have to acknowledge the step Arlene Foster is taking today.

Many of her own party members will not be one bit pleased & that to me is a sign of political courage & I salute her.

Agreed. Great to see. Hopefully it's a decent game.

God bless her little cotton socks!

Please don't tell me this is going to turn into a thread of feigning over this dinosaur because she goes to one GAA match.

The hateful rhetoric that our association have had to endure from this party over the years has been nothing short of disgusting, so it will take a lot more than one attendance to appease me.

On another note, I think the penny has finally started to drop with unionists. Peter Robinson talking about how the unionist community needs to start preparing for a United Ireland and now this.

OK it's a positive gesture and should be accepted as such. Although Foster and her party have a long, long way to travel on the road to reconciliation.

Its nothing to do with "preparing for a United Ireland". It's pure political pragmatism and nothing more. In the wake of the abortion referendum in the Republic Arlene went on record as saying that she had been contacted by Northern Irish Catholics who were contemplating voting for the DUP for the first time since SF are a " pro-choice" party. Attending the Ulster final is part of her strategy to appeal to that percentage of cultural nationalists for whom being against abortion is the most important issue

Couldn't blame her if she never again goes to a Gaelic footbal match , she couldn't understand why Fermanagh had no forwards !

....in entertainment news, apparently the DUP have agreed on rights with UTV to produce the new show "Unionist Eye For The GAA Guy". Executive producer Arlene Foster has today begun a whistle stop tour of GAA grounds the length and breadth of Ulster searching for talent, with audition dates expected to be announced soon (industry insiders are hinting at dates around the 12th of July).
Rumours have it that Sambo McNaughton is about to be confirmed for episode 1, where he'll be forced into a pair of (very) orange cullotes.

What has this to so with any side suffering?

This woman and her colleagues have tore our association apart at every opportunity using some of the most disgusting language.

Now she decides to turn up to one GAA match as some kind of publicity stunt and everyone on here suffers a bout of amnesia.

Ridiculous.

Its steps like this is that will allow the people of this island to move forward to a better future, but of course symbolic acts need to be supported by concrete action.

Regardless, we've come a long way.

No, you're wrong.

I'm not nationalist really, I actually really dislike any form of nationalism in a general sense. Northern Ireland politics is nothing short of tribalism.

The DUP are wrong. In every way imaginable.

They are as right wing as they come. They've a very long and ongoing history of fighting Irish cultural expression.

So do not both sides this. The DUP are an active negative force in the world and their leader is as bad as anyone.

To say otherwise shows a complete ignorance of the situation.

I've no time for her whatsoever even after todays PR stunt. However, the fact is, nothing short of mass emigration out of the six counties by the Unionist community is going to stop us having a shared future with peace on the island. So get used to seeing things like this. Hopefully more from the unionist community especially at underage level get involved. Her being there is significant. It's progress.

Agreed. Fantastic to see. Now watch the usual picking at her attending, take it as it is , a step forward and one to be welcomed.

are you part of a solution? I know about the "uber mench" politics, I might even know a bit of Irish history. SF are cool with her going to Ulster Final, I vote republican, time to bury the hatchet.

Great to see her going along. Hopefully it can contribute to getting Northern Ireland back on track. A working executive is badly needed up there. Hopefully both sides can make Northern Ireland a good country and we ll be good neighbours down here........in our country.
