Round 2 of the football qualifiers throws up a repeat of the 2016 All Ireland semi final. Mayo had a handy time in Limerick two weeks ago but Tipperary are a far better side with a dangerous inside forward line of Michael Quinlivan, Conor Sweeney and Liam McGrath. So I'm expecting a close game and looking forward to visiting Semple Stadium for the first time. LeftHalfBack10 (Mayo) - Posts: 30 - 21/06/2018 16:50:49 2113605 Link 0 |
I'd expect Mayo to have far too much for this Tipperary side. As you said, they have a very dangerous full forward line but i think they'll struggle to get the ball into them enough to do any real damage. They were atrocious against Cork and i'm expecting a massive improvement but even then i'd expect Mayo to come out the other side comfortably enough.

Mayo play well and we win, we don't and Tipp show what they can do then it will spell trouble. I'll say Mayo by 5. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11236 - 21/06/2018 18:45:55 2113625 Link 1 |
Listen look at what Cork did to Tipp.. jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 21/06/2018 19:48:25 2113635 Link 0 |
Not a forgone conclusion as many seem to think. Tipp had only 6 days recovery for cork which was a big disadvantage, and their form prior to that was solid . Mayo need to perform if they are to get to win down there . Vishred (Mayo) - Posts: 303 - 21/06/2018 22:37:35 2113663 Link 0 |
Yes but the last two years show that you don't have to swat aside every team enroute to the final to be able to compete against Dublin or Kerry.

If Sweeney is back to full fitness I think we will give Mayo a tough test. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 22/06/2018 05:38:51 2113681 Link 0 |
Mayo will have too much for Tipp in this one. Dubh_linn (Dublin) - Posts: 2312 - 22/06/2018 07:57:19 2113685 Link 0 |
I'd expect Tipp to win this on home soil and with a bit to spare! tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 22/06/2018 08:45:58 2113689 Link 1 |
Dublin/Kerry/GALWAY you mean

Mayo could easily have been beaten by both cork and derry last year before going on and showing why they are the 2nd best team in the country for a while now. We had probably our 2nd worst performance under Kearns against cork. I wouldn't judge tipp on that one game. If mayo play as good as they can they will win...if we perform it will be a great game

If Mayo win this comfortably Tiobraid, as some neutrals are suggesting, it'll be a major surprise to me. Before a ball was kicked I for one had been regarding Tipp as very firmly in the frame for a Super 8 place, and one bad day out against Cork on a 6-day turnaround hasn't changed my opinion in that regard. I'm no more comfortable with going to Thurles than I would have been going to Omagh or Clones to face the locals there. Not sure where the evidence is that this is going to be anything but a 50/50 game, and imo the toughest qualifier Mayo will have faced into these last 3 years. It has me nervous anyway, and I'd imagine that the Mayo squad will be pretty alert to the challenge.

It's certainly a tricky assignment for Mayo but I wouldnbt go as far as saying its a 50/50 game. Mayo have been incredicbly consistent the last number of years and are a serious outfit. The fac tthat its in Thurles might spook them a bit though. From a Tipp point of view we need big games from a few key players and i'd expect Tipp to hit plenty of long ball in on top of Quinlivan and target the Mayo full back position. I'd expect a big game from O'Brien who thrives on these type of games too. Looking forward to it now. Hope the supporters turn up! tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 22/06/2018 10:51:15 2113710 Link 0 |
Pericles (Mayo) - It was also a tricky assignment in Castlebar 3 years ago in backdoor. Tip are a very good side who play good football. Mayo will be difficult to beat but are most vulnerable early on in the championship. I would like to see them getting another crack at the Dubs as I would expect them to win this time around as they are due a bit of luck. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 22/06/2018 11:43:22 2113725 Link 3 |
McHale Park currently seems to spook this team more than being away Tiobraid, but I know what you mean. With the hurlers out and good weather forecast surely the Tipp crowd will turn up in their thousands? It should bring in a few curious neutrals too. With Mayo support likely to be 7 - 10K, it'd be surprising if the game doesn't bring 15k+ to Semple in spite of Sky coverage. Should make for a great atmosphere. DOC, I know you're anxious to kick Mayo down the stairs (yourself and Tomas O'Se), but I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to kick Galway up,,, When you've performed in championship against the two other suspects named in a knockout game, only then will you know the true value of your stock. Maybe that'll happen this year after the dust settles on the Super 8s? Pericles (Mayo) - Posts: 2521 - 22/06/2018 12:01:16 2113733 Link 1 |
I can't speak for Mayo supporters but you dont get them kind of numbers at Tipp football games. I'd imagine if you have 5-6k it'll be as good as it gets. It's a shame but Tipp supporters won't turn up in their thousands (well not loads of thousands anyway!!) that's for sure! tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 22/06/2018 12:16:25 2113736 Link 0 |
While Tipp always have one big performance in them I don't think it will come against Mayo this weekend. Last year against all odds we went up to Cavan and a super second half won us the day. WildPundit (Tipperary) - Posts: 1709 - 22/06/2018 12:35:36 2113740 Link 0 |
Different this year I feel Mayo have the Limerick performance behind them They've already performed well and are building momentum rather than stuttering along. Should be a handy enough win as I don't think Tipp are at the level that they've managed over the last few seasons jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 22/06/2018 12:58:42 2113747 Link 0 |
