Antrim V Carlow -Why The Silence?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I'm shocked by the silence in all our media outlets about this game..... if this happened in Cork , Kerry, Galway or Offaly the GAA community would be outraged...... Where is Joe Duffy now?

Viewed the clips from BBC(NI) who had camera's at the match. The attack on McManus' was part of the clip and it didn't look good. Players who attempt to do lasting harm to others need to be punished, no place in hurling for this. Hoping the GAA will use the BBC coverage to have a look at the incidents and also the quality of refereeing to deal with the incidents.

I love hard, honest play. Hurling is a passionate game, and sometimes tempers become frayed.
But the reality is here, Carlow set out to injure Neil McManus and Antrim's best players - that is unacceptable.
3 players leaving in an ambulance says it all. I am sure there are 2 sides to the story, but maybe instead of asking Sambo (who somewhat understandably wanted to move on from it) or the RTE hurling analysts who would view a shot to the rocks as "good manly play" probably, maybe they should ask the players who were injured parents/family what they think of it?
Whatever the outcome, it is time to stop viewing hurling people as all being these "men of honour" they are often portrayed to be.

First of all I want to make it clear that in no way do I think what happened in Belfast last Saturday has any place on a hurling field. In fact I contacted one of the injured Antrim players that evening to express my disgust at what happened to him. However to say that it was a pre-meditated plan to deliberately injure anybody is complete nonsense. Colm Bonnar would never send his players out with that mind frame. If an individual chooses to behave in such a way then he should indeed be punished. Some of the events in Corrigan Park have definitely tarnished the reputation of this squad. However discipline has not been a problem with this team in recent years. You can go back to the Ring and league finals over the last year to see that the team actually thrives on good fast open hurling where the emphasis is on the ball. I will not accept the growing consensus that this is a dirty team.

Did I read somewhere the Carlow manager said that discipline was a problem with this Carlow team?

having played a few carlow clubs in the past in practice matches and club tournaments,to say they have never been ones to spare the timber would be putting it mildly.
having said that,i don't think carlow are a dirty team and wexford have played them a few times in the last number of years.
but there is no place for that on a hurling pitch, and it is why i have always believed we should use video review of particularly unsavoury incidents rather than the referee dealt with it on the pitch just because the umpire told him what happened and somebody got a yellow card.

its only the Joe McDonagh cup that's why, few paragraphs here and there in the papers, 20/30 seconds of clips on tv if you're lucky, all contribute to the who gives a **** about it, that's the sad reality of hurling outside the top 8 counties.

But we're told a second tier football championship would be well respected and the way forward.

i can assure you bumpernut,if it happened in a club match or lory meagher cup match i would be up in arms.
it has no place on a gaa field.
the reason there is less about it is because sambo said to leave it go.i can assure you,if it was my son,i would not be so blase about it.

I was referring more to the lack of a national reaction perfect.

Ive no doubt there are people like yourself who will be annoyed regardless of the level of tournament.

However, a lack of video coverage/evidence will have an impact on most people's judgement coupled with the fact that no-one really cares about the tournament beyond the participants and 'hurling anoraks' like yourself.

Sure we only have to look at the attendances at the games so far, it wont ever capture the imagination of the public imo even within the counties competing.
Sure we can all remember the hype around the Ring Cup when it was introduced and now its '2 men and their dogs' watching those games.

As for the 2 particular unsavoury incidents themselves I would like to think they will be properly investigated.
Id say sambo was trying to take the heat out of the situation, particularly if his interview was given straight away at the final whistle.
If I was one of the injured parties I agree I wouldn't be as dismissive or forgiving

I hope the GAA get their hands on the footage of the game and apportion punishments accordingly. I hate the GAA culture of see no evil hear no evil, leave it on the pitch, etc - that is grand where a couple of lads flake one another over an over zealous tackle or the like, but this sounds like downright thuggery and should be dealt with accordingly.

Provincials get coverage. Plenty of coverage of O'Connor incident in the Galway game. There is press coverage of every game in the provincial championships. I didn't even know this game had taken place until Monday when i was reading about it in the Irish News.

I see that after all the whinging we've had to put up with from Antrim all week, including references to lasting damage to Neil McManus and that he wouldn't play again this year, he still managed to miraculously clip over 11 points against Leix today ....
