There is too much waffle spoken but nothing about double header in Cusack Park, Meath won the O'Byrne Cup, Westmeath won in the Joe McD, cuchulainn35 (Armagh) - Posts: 1673 - 15/05/2018 12:49:31 2100951 Link 1 |
In fairness I've seen a few people suggest formats whereby every team gets an opportunity to compete for Sam via group stage. If they're eliminated from that then they'd go into the B competition which would coincide with the All Ireland.

Very sarcastic comment on the live blog re: Meath winning the O'Byrne cup, "yippee for them" or something to that effect. realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8592 - 15/05/2018 13:44:30 2100980 Link 1 |

I thin it is too big a mind set change for most GAA people. Also because we have players serving multiple masters (clubs, colleges, divisions) and often in 2 codes it would be near impossible to play the league during the summer. I often thought maybe the league could become the back door with the All Ireland quarters comprising of the 4 provincial winners + the top 4 counties from the league outside who have not already qualified as provincial winners. this would actually cut back on the number of intercounty games (leaving more time for club games) but make them more meaningful. You would have to inter twine some portion of the league with the championship however .. maybe it's a mad notion .. I do think the provincial championships are important and should be retained and have meaning. They bring out the championship crowds and offer a prestigious and attainable piece of silver ware to teams that for which an All Ireland may be a step too far. Roscommon Footballers being an good example. dahayeser (Cork) - Posts: 337 - 16/05/2018 10:38:09 2101284 Link 0 |

Need more TG4 coverage. RTE coverage is poor. Failure to show Conor McManus major point during highlights very amateur BartMcQueen (Cork) - Posts: 196 - 21/05/2018 20:11:33 2102791 Link 2 |
Completely agree, couldn't believe they didn't show that point and Dessie Mone's in the actual highlights of the game. You'd have to wonder who does the editing of these games and have they a clue what they are at.

In the Offaly Galway Hurling highlights last week they didnt show all the scores but still found time to show an Offaly point attempt that went wide. Some editing there. conordee (Galway) - Posts: 440 - 21/05/2018 22:23:07 2102841 Link 0 |
I think highlights of ALL games should be shown. It's only right for hose I'm weaker counties to see their players on tv and for those players to gain national exposure. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11231 - 21/05/2018 22:24:43 2102843 Link 1 |
Agreed with most of that dahayeser. I work with a laois hurling nut, who told me a couple of weeks ago, that he had an awful job trying to find updates of a particular laois match in jmcdonagh cup. No media, online or air waves attention what so ever. Then they wonder why these competitions don't take off. Any competition needs publicity, sponsorship and most importantly promotion. You would think, the Sunday game would be heavily involved in the promotion of any such competition and hurling in general. Then they talk about trying a second tier football championship. It would not get any publicity or promotion. This is why players would not be interested in it. Remember initially clubs never thought a European league in soccer would ever take off. That a European rugby competition would never take off. That even a rugby world cup would take off. They did, through media attention, financing and promotion promotion promotion!!! If you had a scenario where a team like my own entered the main Competition. Give them an initial crack at that. Then if they are eliminated, put them into a senior intermediate all Ireland championship. This structure works in county club championships. Really promote it, having games on before the all Ireland series games. Show these matches live, before the main event. Have your intermediate all Ireland semis on before the main all Ireland semi finals. You would have a full croker then, as I've noticed over the years croker is no longer full for semi finals. Finally have an ALL IRELAND WEEKEND. Have your intermediate final on the Saturday and the main event on the Sunday. Now before you give me all the reasons why this wouldn't work, it is a format that works at club level. It would take time to bed in and I do realise rejigging of fixtures would have to be analysed. However if it got the respect it would deserve, with constant advertising/promotion, I think it could work on a county level as well as club level. BUT if it's treated like the Joe Mcdonagh cup, the Tommy Murphy cup, the all Ireland b championship, being played at ridiculous times and venues just to fulfill fixtures and getting 3 lines in a newspaper, then it has no chance?? Your thoughts!?? Longfordbaz (Longford) - Posts: 145 - 21/05/2018 22:49:33 2102850 Link 0 |
Excellent discussion of the game on the OTB GAA podcast with Enda McGinley. He does more to describe the key points in 10 minutes than RTE managed with actual footage available. Brilliant job and done to a high standard for every match. I would happily pay the licence fee for that service. Eddie the Exile (Monaghan) - Posts: 1058 - 22/05/2018 07:26:42 2102871 Link 0 |
The night time Sunday game i think should concentrate more on the games they didn't show. You sit down to watch it and they show more highlights of the live games they showed that day where they have 3 guys analyze the games, then it takes two more guys that night to analyze the same games again!! They then show the smaller counties footage of about 30secs, and the two guys path them on the back and say well done for trying. I'd watch any team hurl, Westmeath/Carlow/Laois/Antrim/Meath/Kerry etc are all very enjoyable games. ke40 (Kildare) - Posts: 209 - 22/05/2018 09:27:06 2102898 Link 0 |
Posted this in the Tyrone/Mon thread but it's probably more appropriate here as regards RTÉ's coverage. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13707 - 22/05/2018 09:30:59 2102900 Link 1 |
How in the name of god did they miss McManus's glorious point in their highlights, it's like they just threw random clips of the game together for 10 minutes. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2105 - 22/05/2018 09:32:31 2102902 Link 0 |
How long has Tomás been doing the Sunday Game Live? I thought he was great for the Mayo Galway game even if Brolly kept rudely interrupting. Can analyze the game on his feet better than O'Rourke or Brolly. He kinda looks fedup at times on the highlights Sunday Game. Maybe he was just bored there and prefers talking off-the-cuff.

RTE will claim that cameras or commentators weren't at the games but last Sunday Ger Canning was doing the TV coverage of Cork v Clare in hurling while on Radio 1 Daragh Maloney was commentating the same game, both work for RTE! Why didn't 1 person do the commentating for both TV and radio and put the other person doing some other game. Why can't they show another game on RTE+1 or RTE News channel, a few years ago TG4 were showing Pro 12 rugby game Munster were playing, we were told to press the red button if we wanted to see the Connacht game instead and lo and behold there was the other game, why can't RTE do the same or are they like statues afraid to do anything. The night show is a mess, showing the live matches over again with untelevised live games getting a few mins, totally wrong way to do a show, show us the untelevised live games then show us a few mins of their televised games. I wrote to RTE in the past about their format, when games are on in Croke Park and for example Mayo, Kerry, Donegal, west if Ireland teams are playing at 4pm in Dublin it's nearly impossible to be at the game then make it home in the west on time to see the highlights at 9.30, i told them why don't they show and talk about the 2pm game first then show the later game after tht but no response, they don't want to be told how to do anything, it's their station and they call the shots, no wonder they have lost the pro 14, 6 nations in rugby, champions league, premiership in soccer, some horse racing riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 22/05/2018 10:26:09 2102937 Link 0 |
