New York For The National League

(Oldest Posts First)

It would be great IMO if New York could play in the NFL.
Make their entry in the championship more realistic.
And maybe it could be done that they play two games a weekend or something when they visit etc.

And better still maybe Monaghan get to play them away and we get a plane trip to a game!!!
I be fierce jealous of Connacht lads getting a trip to matches in London and New York every 5 years!!!

good ides but problem most of [ well some] of the new york players cant leave amarica, they wont get back in, but yes send all div 4 teamsout there to play them, what a boost that would be for us lesser lights, but it wont happen, the gaa wont "waste" money on carlow/wicklow/new york football

How would it work lads. Would New York play all their games at home? If they did that would hardly be fair on the other teams. If they don't play all their games at home would they play all their away games in one chunk to cut down travel costs? If they did would it be anyway feasible to get a large chunk of time off work from their American employers? If they played their games in the same way as everyone else (one game home, one game away, one game home, etc.) would they be able to afford the travel costs of all those multiple Atlantic crossings? Unless I'm missing something I just don't see how it is logistically feasible.

If I was overstaying a Visa, I certainly wouldn't be playing in a team that will receive nationwide coverage across the pond, (albeit just for a few days) drawing needless attention to myself.

Rest of team are legal now, different from years ago when our hurlers couldn't travel after beating Derry in Ulster Champo. On paper it would be fantastic for NY to get those extra matches, but the reality of 5hr. transatlantic flights, accommodations, etc. would prove far to expensive. Unlike the quick trip over the Irish Sea for London, to accommodate NY would be very difficult, not impossible, but very difficult. I do believe NY should be afforded the chance in the backdoor like every other team. The workup and dedication of the management and players should not come down to 1 match and would definitely benefit us in the long term!

It could only work if they participate just like any other team.

I think there's enough complexity in the GAA

Nice idea though

I don't think the league is a runner at the moment but something should be done to help them prepare for the championship. Maybe along the lines of the Division 3 or 4 winners getting sent to America for a camp and playing New York over 2 weekends. Wouldn't work every year buthe would most

Yeah it's a nice idea but logistically it would be a nightmare. Maybe they could come up with something novel for the Championship instead? Off the top of my head, take New York, London and the 2 lowest ranked league teams in Connacht. Play a 2 semi finals and final over the course of a long weekend - Memorial weekend is the end of May I think?

If New York want additional games they could always play against a team drawn from the North America Board ie a team selected from Chicago, Canada, San Francisco etc. Now I have no idea of how even the standards would be between the two areas. But it could always be tried for one or two years and see what emerges from it.

However if the North American Board team had many members from the west coast travel would be a major issue.

Seem to remember that there used to be "away" finals in New York for the winners of both the NFL and FBD League, could be one option to consider.

As Narrowback said, the NY hurlers beat Derry in the 2006 (I believe) Ulster championship, but could not travel back to play Antrim in the final due to immigration issues. This led to the final being pushed off and played in Boston months later. This was their last participation in the Ulster championship
