Lack Of Promotion Of GAA Championships

(Oldest Posts First)

It just dawned on me today that the provincial championships kick properly into life this weekend, with the All-Ireland hurling champions in hurling making their championship bow as well as Kilkenny, Donegal, Cavan, Dublin, Offaly, etc.
I also heard this morning that Eurovision starts tonight. The similarity here is that it is pretty much the first I heard of both.
I do wonder why can't the GAA promote the championships better? Is it because the provincial championships are a dead duck not worth the expense, or is marketing and promotion not the GAA's strong point?
Surely they can do better to at least make people aware it is on? Or am I the only one missing it?

Hurling championship started on Saturday with the McDonagh cup.

No highlights on RTE or TG4, no articles in the papers.

These are the teams ranked 11-16 in the country in hurling and they
are being totally ignored.

Anyone calling for a B Championship in football should bear this in mind.

The Connacht football championship started on Sunday. At the end of a programme previewing this year's championships, the Sligo v London and NewYork v Leitrim games got about 3 minutes coverage at best.
These games are part of this year's championship, but received minimal coverage. Of course none of the 4 teams are considered worth a decent programme by the national broadcaster.

The Joe McDonagh Cup hurling had no coverage at all. Offaly v Wicklow onSunday, Leinster SFC, will probably get a passing coverage next Sunday night.

I know they started already, you are missing my point. There was nothing about them thus far. Bad promotion by all involved was my point

there is a lack of promotion at every level.no sooner than the last ball is kicked in the PL on sunday, sky will be promoting the 15th of august.
there was no advertisements for club activity on radios in wexford anyway and i am sure everywhere else is the same.
the gaa needs a dedicated marketing team, and if they have one already, well god help us all.

A question i have is this. All the people who are complaining about the New York etc not being on TV. How many would have actually watched it? Now that it's after the fact everyone will of course say they would have. New York have been playing in the championship for the last 20 years and their games have never been televised so why is it now an issue?

perfect10 (Wexford) - Posts: 2322 - 09/05/2018 08:57:48- I think it is more of god help us. All games should get the equal promotion. It appears that the weaker teams within the GAA do not exist in either hurling or football. I was of the opinion that the licence fee was being paid by all counties!

Good point regarding the treatment of 2nd and subsequent tier competitions, look how poorly the Gaa promotes it's main competitions, a second tier in football wouldn't stand a chance.

For a promotional facelift launch, the GAA could go with this -
'Super 18' (incl NFL top 14, prior '2 Div 3' promoted and prior Paudi O Se Cup finalists) starts with 6 groups of 3, playing each other once.
Pairings could be exclusively 'inter prov' to contrast with the retained Prov Championships which are played in parallel.
Top 2 in each group join 4 Prov Champs in the AI KO Rd of 16 - Prov Champs get a bye to the AI KO QFs (revert to KO) instead, if they qualify via the group as expected as well.
Dead rubber risk in 3-team groups can be fully eliminated if - loser of 1st group match plays again in the 3rd match (when 2 advance; or again in the 2nd match when 1 advances).
'Other 14' plays for the POSe Cup - 4x3 groups and 1 two-legged Div 4 pair.
Best to keep these groups near 'intra Prov' local rivalry.
Best 3 2nds in 4x3 join 5 group winners in QFs.
Final 2 go to Super 18 in the following year, while all 14 pursue Sam via Prov Championships as well.
