Having neighbours call in at home for the All-Ireland final (hurling & football)

Mothers home made apple tart and tea at half time.

Once the game was over, heading outside with my brother to replay the game on the lawn, pretending to be the star player

The days of the Archbishop throwing the ball in to start the game & the smile on his face as the players went down on one knee to kiss his ring.................................

1980s and early 90s, still happens at some junior clubs but insurance issues a major problem. It was by far the best part of going to the game, one man in the village asked to do the line, he felt now that he was the 2nd in command after the ref so he would wave the flag and clear everybody back behind the line, within a minute everybody would be out onto the pitch again, I remember a championship match where the ref stopped the game and asked the supporters to go back to the line so everybody took 2 steps back thinking they were near the side line, ref said turn around and see where the line was, we were level with one of the goalposts, that's how far the see saw motions of the crowd were moving. Anyway back to the linesmen, the ref could see that he couldn't control the crowd so he started blaggarding the linesman as well, he would shout at the linesman 'will you keep that crowd behind the line or i'll have to get somebody else to do the line' and then he'd wink at the crowd just to say he wasn't serious and to keep winding up the linesman. The longer the messing went on the angrier and thicker the linesman would get and then he'd start chasing the crowd along the line which would have the supporters on their knees roaring with laughter, this happened with every game with both sets of supporters at it, no malice or bullying was intended, in fact the linesman in 1 game would be the man messing around for the next game. It was all a bit of banter between the supporters, the linesmen, referees etc, the only gang taking things seriously would be the players, to this day I haven't a clue who won these matches. Sadly nothing like that happens now, even telling the younger generation this they shake their heads in disbelief thinking we're having them on. The games nowadays are too serious, even underage matches have a feeling that violence can break out in the stands between opposition supporters at any time.

Trips to Croke Park following Offaly teams. Sadly those days are behind us now, I wonder if we will see their likes again.

Seò Sport on a Friday night - can anyone please tell me why this was dropped - one of the best sport shows the set up production and presentation was top notch. Darragh O'Cinneide was an excellent presenter lovely tone to the voice and a show that more like friends talking in the pub about sport more than a live show presentation. Dropping this show is the one sports blot on TG4 copybook cos every other thing they have done sports wise has to be commended but this show yes's this isn't what I most miss about the Gaa

Great read! Especially for a Yank who fell in love with hurling and more so the whole club scene, at least how I saw it in rural KK. It's one of the best things about Ireland and reading something positive, hearing about your memories of slower, less litigious times, aka "the good ol' days" is nice.

While I don't have much in the way of memories I'll throw my two cents in ...

+ No pervasive social media!!
+ Helmets, was different seeing facial expressions, words said, etc. Built a better connection between supporters and athletes.
+ DJ
+ TW

Agree 100%. Would love to see Dara on RTE , with Michael Lyster leaving this year they should have a complete overhaul and get rid of Brolly Spillane and ORourke.

Your right Dara was good for sure.
Would you leave Spillane on board as well or drop him off the panel ?

That was an excellent show. The panellists analysed both hurling and football matches, even if they were associated with one sport in their playing careers. RTE have separate analysts for each, would be nice to hear Pat Spillane et al, comment on championship hurling matches.
