Can winning captains please just stop this at all levels?

A cringeworthy hangover from the 'British Empire' Morty. Couldn't agree with you more. 'Jolly good chaps'

Round of applause would be much better. Enthusiasm is always dead by the 3rd hip hip

Agree totally ,its very patronising and the players don't want to be hearing it ,only captain I can remember not doing it was cluxton last year and fair play to him for doing it ,he knew it was patronising and all of that and you can clearly see the respect he has for mayo ,he's class act that lad on and off the field ,now let every other winning captain take note and follow suit

We've just watched a great game of hurling and all you've got to say is a whinge about captain's speeches.

Hate it and in fairness Stephen Cluxton does not do it in his speeches...thanks the opponent (usually mayo) and that's that.

The worst part of the speech for sure , losing teams dont want to hear it, i think do away with the speeches altogether, its the same thing all the time, 1st say a few words in irish, then thank players, the fans, the sponsors, and then a special mention to the manager, then talk about the losing team and say hip hip hooray, and then say up the (insert county nickname) in a uplifting voice, please just get rid of it

Nope I see it in a more positive light. It acknowledges your opponent and gives respect to them. Its saying "we are all one community". that overcoming the challenge of the opposition is what gives this victory its real meaning. It's saying, " we won today but there's also more to life than just winning".

At least that's what it would mean to me. But I agree -- if you're a captain of a team and it has no meaning for you and you think it's a load of drivel then don't indulge in it. Everything that a winning captain says in the victory speech should have meaning and sincerity in it.

Out of curiosity what does he thank them for? Showing up? I think I'd rather have the 3 cheers than an opponent thanking me for turning up on the day.

It's a crutch for people to use who are not used to delivering public speeches to thousands of people.

Totally agree. I see the Roscommon captain didn't do it at the end of the NFL D2 final. He just asked for a round of applause.

Sure, we'll bring back the Bishop to throw the ball in, and you can kiss his ring! :-)

Keep it, it's the only part of the speeches that can't actually be messed up. It is an old tradition from when we were all British and probably naff in today's world. Nothing tops Garryowen FC 'Hurrah Hurrah for Garryowen' song. It's like something from the Crimean war.
