Replying To festinog:  "A lad clearly inspired and made proud by the beauty of a game that is unique and thoroughly Irish, posts a warmhearted paean on a GAA website to share his love of the sport with likeminded Gaels. And what happens?

A bunch of big ball bullies show up to accuse him of insecurity.

The irony."
Bit of a difference between "sharing his love of the sport" and daring anyone to question that hurling is the best sport on earth, while saying no other sport even comes close.

Lordy, but you football lads are a very sensitive bunch.

Ye're sport is lovely too lads. We're just as proud of you as we are you're older brother; just because he's faster, more skillful, hardier and prettier than you, doesn't mean we don't not love you.

Replying To CastleBravo:  "Not a very good comparison, since in boxing there is a definitive "greatest" boxer at any given point in time, and this is determined by winning boxing matches against other competitors and obtaining belts. Claiming to be the greatest boxer is a claim of ambition that can be challenged with reality.

But there's no inter-sport competition to determine the best sport, and any claims of a single sport being the "greatest" is very much based on background and opinion. Claiming to play the greatest sport does come across as an insecure clap on your own back since you know you can't be proven objectively wrong.

Despite being more of a hurling fan I do find the constant need to declare hurling to be the best sport on earth to be ridiculous.

It's second only in annoyance to the desperate craving for the approval of random foreign people watching it; where GAA news outlets get excited and run actual articles when an someone in America or the UK with 7 twitter followers tweets ""Just saw a video of hurling, what a crazy sport the Irish have lol". It's pathetic."
Agreed, it can be a bit embarrassing seeing some of the "reaction" videos and some other vids where a fellow American says something dumb. Then again, how would they know and with the attitudes of many, might they be afraid to ask? I'm a diehard Hurling fan which is not easy when living here. Hurling is absolutely on an upward trajectory though with well over a thousand clubs, not far from 2000+, some pretty good and undoubtedly more organized than plenty of clubs in Ireland. Not many but more and more by the day. I believe in 20 or so years we will be competitive, if not dominant. When one country has over 50 times the population of another, it won't take much provided our coaching improves as well as feeder programs get established as currently, most clubs are mainly adults.

Both demand a discipline that is unreal. The players of both seem to have such a respect for the game and each other. If you want to challenge for excitement I am willing to listen.
Up the Deise, Tipp, Rebels, Yellow bellows,Cats,Tribes men and all the others."
Dammit you're right

Good point. I live in the PNW and the growth in hurling over the last five years has been phenomenal, while football on the otherhand has plateaued. Chatting to the yanks that have taken up hurling, so this is a completely subjective opinion, they are drawn to hurling because it is so unique, while football is competing against soccer, Australian football, rugby, etc. and so struggles to make a mark. My local club here is dual code, and interestingly, the football team is almost entirely made up of Irish lads, while the hurlers are almost entirely American. And we won the junior C in San Fran last year so they're not just out there pretending!

Hope we don't have one sided finals today in the football."
There is nowhere near 8 possible winners of liam

Interesting how some people react. When stating this thread difference of opinion of course to be expected. However would not expect the bitterness. As a the holder of a World Championship medal in a team sport that I love, no problem with giving hurling the nod and definitely no insecurity. Also o.k. with those who do not agree with me.

I don't think your post warrants bitterness.

The reason for it though is that these threads have had a history of turning into a knock football thread and that can be wearisome for football lovers.

For an example of this you only have to look at the is hurling boring thread to see that the last few posts are now onto the football bashing.

I think it's more to do with HoganStand fatigue than anything to do with your post.
