Clifford can only be termed an up and coming player. He can only be compared like for like. He was an outstanding Minor footballer and possibly one of the best ever. He can't be judged on speculation. He has great talent and he is certainly one to watch and we are yet to see how he handles life in a senior squad. Best of luck to him! What strikes me is that he talks like a fella going on 50 way to sensible for his age. gormdubhgorm (Dublin) - Posts: 990 - 19/12/2017 17:26:44 2065624 Link 0 |
Kerry pinning all their hopes on a minor... jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20600 - 21/12/2017 09:03:24 2065747 Link 0 |
I think the reference is to performing against good teams at their peak, not against poor teams or teams in decline. As we all know, there isn't a decent team in Ulster at the moment; none of them are even close to making a realistic challenge for Sam; avoiding a thumping in the semis is about their limit.

Essmac I would argue that our team have been in decline since 2009 when Darragh o'sé left the ranks. Since then we've lost diarmuid Murphy Tom Sullivan tomás o'sé Marc o'sé tommy griffin mike McCarthy Declan o'Sullivan paul Galvin tommy Walsh gooch cooper Aidan o'mahony all brilliant players. I would have to say Dublins big rise came on the back of the great Kerry Tyrone and cork teams natural decline but we'll all rise again with gods help. You would have to say best of luck to the young man. From a neutral point of view there is no greater sight in the GAA to see an impressive young talent get an opportunity which i hope he takes in the league. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 21/12/2017 13:28:09 2065779 Link 0 |
You make some good points there username, I'd say the reason he's being fast tracked to the senior ranks is number 1 to stave off the Aussies and number 2 we need him. Jod is a one hit wonder and has been living off his player of the year award since 2014 but doesn't seem to have heart or bravery to push on to the next level. Donaghy is probably too old now to make any real impact anymore. Mikey geaney and Johnny Buckley are the two most inconsistent players I've ever seen, donnacha Walsh is too old and even though the mind is willing the body isn't able anymore, fitzmaurice made a massive mistake not playing the young lads that won us the league last year and they'd all have a full year under their belts now only for his fear. KingdomBoy1 (Kerry) - Posts: 14092 - 21/12/2017 15:20:50 2065792 Link 0 |
I'd agree with a lot of that, especially regarding Fitzmaurice not trusting the younger lads yet. He needs to let go of this fear, and put his belief in them. They won't progress otherwise. I think you're being a bit harsh on O'Donoghue though. He's had a very injury interrupted spell since 2014, and could get back to his best with a clean run of games. There's certainly room for Clifford though, as you said. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2042 - 21/12/2017 16:22:57 2065798 Link 0 |
agree and hope he does continue to have a long fruitful and healthy career. Considering the demands placed on amateur players now all it takes is one serious injury to finish any players carer at the top { hopefully he can remain serious injury free and that goes for all players } but the reality is different. Also no matter about the lure of playing for your county in an all Ireland final the realistic possibility is that the lure of a paid professional career in a warm climate and all that goes with it will outweigh anything achievable at home and only takes the right offer or a frustration with the intercounty scene and he could be gone and not realise his gaelic football potential. Comparing players now to other players is not a realism as there are too many factors involved and circumstances and conditions between those who are being compared are totally different to each other. Like all good players you can only judge them on what they have achieved and speculate and what they can become. Good luck to all for the new season, and a merry Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous and above all healthy new year. bulmccabe (Tyrone) - Posts: 361 - 21/12/2017 16:44:25 2065799 Link 0 |
I don't know bud, when you see a fella pulling out of a 60/40 ball that's in his favor then I think he's lacking commitment to the Kerry cause.

Looking forward to seeing Clifford this year, will he have the same impact as O'Callaghan? Should be good! realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8592 - 24/01/2018 20:46:24 2070445 Link 1 |
Ya I'm lucky that I got to see Clifford with his club and district teams and Kerry minors realdub and he's good , he just turned 19 so wheather or not he'll have the impact that o'Callaghan had for yer selves remains to be seen and often in these kinda situations it could be someone that you wouldn't expect that'll become the next super star. Who would have thought 3 years ago that Fenton would have had the impact he's had for Dublin when we were expecting Costello to be the man or who would have thought that Paul Murphy would have had the impact he's had for us or that jod would have been a one hit wonder. In fairness Fitzmaurice put Brian O'Beaglaoich straight in as a championship starter from minor a few years back, and he also brought Sean O'Shea in last year straight from minor but didn't use him. Both will likely be starting this year. Fitzmaurice is not afraid to give outstanding players their chance. From what I have heard the others have not performed well enough in training up to now to command a starting place, and in particular have been outmatched physically when the serious stuff starts. A lot of these lads will be pushing 21-22 this year though, so I'd imagine they'll have developed a bit more and I'd be surprised if we don't see several new faces this year. @kingdomboy1 that's harsh on JOD he has been absolutely plagued by injury for years and his confidence looks shot as a result. I dont know if we will ever see 2013-14 form from him again but if he could get fully fit and get a run of games he is still one of the best around IMO. Ya Gerry he has had his injuries but so has Moran maher and Paul geaney, he needs to cop on IMO he's 28 now and time is running out for him.

have to agree with you there KingdomBoy, O' Donoghue needs to give up the cheeky approach and knuckle down this year.
