National Draw – ticket selling

The National Draw has been a great success in recent years to the Gaeil Fhánada club and we will commence selling tickets shortly for the draw.  Members of the club going door to door to every household in Fanad.  100% of the funds raised go directly to the club and in recent years has helped us cover the costly expenses of player insurance and levies among other things.

We will also be delivering a 2018 newsletter to each household which highlights the 2018 year for Gaeil Fhánada and shows milestones, achievements along with what we have in store for 2019.

If we happen to miss you, please let us know and we can call back and get you sorted with a ticket.

As always, we appreciate the support and hope that the ticket buyers understand the big impact their small gesture makes to the club.

Victory for Minor girls in County final

Gaeil Fhánada 3-6
Gleann tSúilí 1-10

Gaeil Fhánada and Gleann tSúilí met yesterday in Dunfanaghy to contest the Division 4 minor county final. While the rain held off for the match, a strong wind made conditions difficult for both teams when playing against the breeze.

Fanad had the wind advantage in the first half but it was Glenswilly who opened the scoring with a point in the first minute. Fanad responded a minute later with a goal from Lauren Carr; however the next 15 minutes passed without any scores, with the wind making its presence felt and Fanad guilty of giving possession away too cheaply. Glenswilly in particular were working very hard during this period and were unlucky to see a sure point catch the wind and drop short into Maria Dougherty's hands. Gaeil Fhánada came alive again in the 21st minute with Lauren Carr kicking a point from play. Kate Sweeney got her name on the scoresheet a minute later with a nice point after good passing from Michelle Mc Devitt and Eibhlín Shiels. Lauren Carr seized an opportunity moments later to add another score to her tally when she raced forward after winning possession of the kickout and smashed the ball into the roof of the net, in what was a great individual goal. Fanad added another goal 2 minutes later. Lauren hit a high ball in, which caught the wind and somehow dropped in for a goal. This sparked Glenswilly into action and after winning their own kick out, they worked the ball up the pitch into the heart of the Fanad defence. Fanad conceded a free from this attack and Glenswilly made no mistake by hitting it over the bar. Possession was exchanged several times before Clare Friel, who was working hard in the forward line, was fouled and a free kick was awarded. Lauren Carr stepped up to hit it over the bar to finish off the scoring for the first half.

HT: Gaeil Fhánada 3-3, Glenswilly 0-2.

Glenswilly had the wind advantage after the break and quickly made use of this by scoring a goal and 2 points in succession. Glenswilly gained momentum with each score and Fanad were finding it difficult to gain and keep possession against the breeze. It was Niamh Mc Devitt who took charge and after winning the kickout, she sprinted forward towards the danger zone and won a free kick after being fouled. Lauren Carr stepped up and exchanged a pass with Michelle Mc Devitt before firing it over the bar to open the scoring for Fanad. Glenswilly responded immediately with a point of their own and scored a further 2 points before Clare Friel stood up and kicked a very important point for Fanad, after good work from Ciara Mc Elwaine and Kate Sweeney. Glenswilly weren't going to be easily stopped and kept their scoreboard ticking over with another point. Both teams had chances in the subsequent moments of the game but tiredness was taking its toll and the wind was wreaking havoc. Glenswilly were also putting huge pressure on the Fanad defence and it looked like things could've went either way with 5 minutes to go. Lauren Carr pointed from a free and it seemed like this would give Fanad some breathing space in the final moments but Glenswilly still had enough time to finish out the scoring with a further 2 points before the full time whistle sounded.

Huge credit must go to both teams; they gave it everything they had in difficult conditions and played out an entertaining game of football with a nail biting conclusion. The breezy conditions had a big impact on yesterday's game which made it the ultimate game of two halves. Glenswilly must also be credited for their second half performance, coming back from a 10 point deficit and almost pulling off a fantastic comeback.

Gaeil Fhánada will be happy with the overall team performance and each member of the panel certainly gave a good account of herself over the course of the hour. Maria Dougherty made a few fine catches in nets, while the full back duo of Siobhán Sweeney and Niamh Mc Devitt were ever present and steady. Méabh Duffy made some very important interceptions and will be happy with her performance marking the very talented and flighty Nadine Friel, while Michelle Mc Devitt kept things going in the middle of the field. Lauren Carr was central to proceedings, scoring a massive 3-4 and Kate Sweeney, who looked dangerous on the attack, was also an important outlet on the right wing throughout the match. The management will also be happy with the contributions of the subs when they entered the action and in the end, it was Fanads cushion of 3 first half goals that proved to be vital in ensuring victory.

There were great scenes of celebration from the Gaeil Fhánada contingent when captain Niamh Mc Devitt was presented with the shield and there is no doubt that the future of ladies football in Fanad is looking very positive.
