Fanning plays down systems influence

Waterford manager Paraic Fanning has stressed that they are not playing to any great system as he states the players are ‘making the right decisions’.

The Deise were very impressive in their win over Clare, hitting 0-31 to book their place in the HL semi-final where they will face Galway on Sunday.

GAA pundits were wholesome in their praise for Waterford last weekend, and many commented on how they were playing a direct brand of hurling.

However, Fanning told the Waterford News & Star that the players giving the right ball was more of a reason for their win, rather than any particular system they may have introduced.

“I’m not sure. There’s a lot of talk about the way we’re playing but essentially we’re making good decisions and working hard to do that,” said Fanning.

“If the good decisions we make turn into good scores then we’re happy with that. We’ve only tweaked a couple of things so I think there’s too much emphasis on systems but at the end of the day the lads made plenty of good decisions and we ended up putting up a big score on the board.”
