12 weeks for Connolly. Is a GAA Witch Hunt in progress? - 6 Like(s)
It's not just on the pitch if anyone remember this incident a few years back The man needs a bit of sports anger management, there are a few other players in teams across the country that could do with it to...but Connolly is nearly in some incident every game; and you can't at this stage say it's down to everyone being against Dublin..It's just common sense. A fantastic footballer but one with anger issues that you can see on and off the pitch. He could do with those 12 weeks to seriously take a good look at how he's repeatedly letting his team down. He's lucky he plays for Dublin as his discipline goes largely unnoticed because of all the trophies coming in..If he was on a Kerry /Tyrone/mayo or in fact most of the top ten teams he would be viewed as letting his fans and team down. Mayo vs Roscommon - 3 Like(s)
Although they have no real form it's a bit daft to totally drop them out as not as able to contend with ourselves Kerry or Dublin. Mayo clearly do not work in terms of form. Found that out the hard way last year ! It's all the day with them and regardless of how crap they play against an average team (like last year with nearly every team and Tipp)they still managed to give a real go to Dublin not once but twice. Yes Mayo are not the team they were 2-3 years . These days they are just ridiculously unpredictable, random somewhat entertaining because of their near misses and collapses but not the same team more in terms of unpredictablity than being not able to beat the best . I don't know what to make of them. I won't be putting any bets on them for any match that's for sure .but I wouldn't write them off because of their form. They obviously don't seem to work that way. Is this Mayo's year? - 3 Like(s)
It would be like watching a paralyzed man in a wheelchair stand up after 65 years and walk after eight operations and false hope. Mayos AI win would be in a different class to Leicester city title or Donegal of 2012. They came out of nowhere and won without any hints of nearly winning for the previous 20 years or so . Famines yes ,but famines without dinner being waved in your face whilst hungry. I think most fans around the country ( besides Dubs and maybe Fermanagh after this summer) want to see it happen on Saturday because it would be a very very special day in Gaa terms that no one will forget .Every all Ireland Mayo win after their first famine breaker people will not care, nor will it be so special for them as a county , it just can't be , but It's like a sad movie that everyone just needs to see the happy ending so the film can end. I want to see Aidan O Shea and all the old men in the stands bawling their eyes out with happiness , I want to see the celebrations on the news in castlebar and Enda Kenny singing after ten pints of Porter, I want Mayo for Sam not even from a gaa fans perspective but just as a human being. Just that raw emotion of relief of an entire county to be played out across the country . Everyone hates watching suffering and I know no one will die because of the result but its this suffering that everyone wants to end .It's just human nature , I can't help but feel sorry for that county and I have family from there so I've always had a little thing for Mayo so I hope they can all do us a favour and win the bloody thing for once! Went on way longer than I intended , deep rant over. GameOfTyrones (National) - 30/09/2016 10:03:51 |

IF (big if) Mayo win the AI the fans won't care less about your opinion or anyone else thinks about them being '3/4 champions'.All teams in the AI championship play within the rules.Which mean a team can lose one provincial game and still win the AI, big deal.Thread seems like a cheap dig at Mayo ,with one hand building them up to be potential champions with the other hand implying they won't be real ones if they do, but the Dubs will be 'real' champions. It's the stuff I hear twelve-year-olds say. The word Culchie - 3 Like(s)
Irish for back of the house obviously . Way back when, rural dwellers would enter the back of the house into the kitchen so they wouldn't make a mess of the front of the house that used to be used for formal visits. So they would be known as cul an ti's and you can understand how that end up becoming culchie over time and probably seem strange to the Dubs.So they'd cal us country folk cul-an-ti's then eventually Culchie was coined in today's English .Remember reading up a bit on this for a history project back a few years ago for college.Jackeens is another story but it's not a history forum so i'll shut me mouth with that. Am Surprised by Kerry - 3 Like(s)
I've being looking at polls on different sources on the net. I think on Joe.ie something like 50( i cant be exact on this one but deffo evenish) percent of people thought Kerry will win. Pundit Arena says 66 percent to Dublin 33 to Kerry. Kerry Gaa proboards doesn't have a poll (that I can find anyhow) On Mayo's main Gaa website it is a little more optimistic with Kerry at 47 percent Resevouir Dub page doesn't have a poll but general consenus is that Dubs will win. I would love to say a poll were no Dubs or Kerry fans are voting , I think that would be closer to 75 25 in favour of Dublin although I could be wrong. The interest in a game develops over time. Through passion and tradition. You can't just buy it from a ticket. Galway have a much larger population. But have to compete with more rugby, hurling and soccer especially in the city. I live here and notice it. Mayo have half the pop but a more faithful pop around the big ball and that's all there is to it. The two cancel each other out and no divide compared to Dublin and everyone else. Give any other reason as to why Dublin might lose , but hunger will not be an issue for them, thinking otherwise you might just be trying to pull the wool over your own eyes.I don't intend offence over that either. GameOfTyrones (National) - 25/08/2016 20:42:06 |
Is there bad blood between Dub and Mayo? - 2 Like(s)
It's hard not to hate the neighbour with a new merc and your going around still driving a 1999 Honda civic . . but then everyone else is a little bit jealous of Dublin , same thing with Kilkenny for years and Kerry some years ago. I doubt the players actually hate each other but a few match ups might be a little more anger fueled ,particularly Connolly and Keegan ..and no harm , always makes for good entertainment. I quite enjoy Dublin/Mayo games because of this rivalry that has been going the past few years. With Mayo and Dublin I always think before the game I'm not sure who will win , I can't say I feel this way about Dublin and any other team, even ourselves or Kerry ( in my opinion)are not yet ready to actually run Dublin to the wire for 75 mins . The Kerry/Dublin rivalry is dying off simply because Kerry can't beat Dublin anymore . Mayo can and that is what I think gets under the Dubs skin a little . Most other teams just hope for the best against Dublin ,Mayo 100% believe they can win and I think nearly every Dub fan knows in the back of their minds when playing Mayo there's a chance they might lose..I know you can say there is a chance that Dublin could lose Kerry or Tyrone but if I was a Dub fan I probably wouldn't right now believe they would lose to either, but Mayo would be the team that would have me worried and that is where a good rivalry comes from , two evenly matched teams and that feeling of terror and anxiety as a fan not knowing for sure who will win . Being a "true fan" isnt actually much fun - 2 Like(s)
You have teams like Donegal who come out of nowhere and win an All-Ireland and then kind of disappear again for twenty years or so and win it again . That is magical in its own way, leister city-esk but it is very different to Mayo. The expectation and long thirst I'd imagine to be much stronger due to being so close on so many occasions .They're always up there with the top dogs ,Dublin,Kerry , ourselves ,Donegal.Yet they are slightly inferior because they haven't reached the holy grail. For Mayo to finally win Sam I think would be something special for every GAA fan ,regardless if they hate them or love them , it is something that would live long in the memory of every fan not only Mayo fans. Where were you on the day Mayo won the All-Ireland. I don't think much of another Kerry AI or a Dublin one. The Donegal one popped up from a decent championship the year before with McGuniess but it didn't have as much history as the well known Mayo story. It has the makings of a film. 65 years since their last win.A priest , 'a curse'. Seven final defeats in a row since 1989 ,A draw in 1996 .That is 8 finals including the replay. The odds of not winning just one of these 8 are statistically very, very low but yet they haven't delivered . Half the country has a little giggle when ye lose another final but at the same time I think most want to witness the fairytale ending . I'm bored of watching them mess up in the final.Andy Moran has been on that panel for a long time ,he's been through the finals of 04,06,12,13 and this will be his fifth final for Mayo. Another loss would be very sad indeed, although I accept sport does not care about fairytale endings . If Mayo are good enough will they will win ,simple as. Can this be their year? Most would say no.Going on form Dublin should hammer them, but from watching Mayo over the years they have a habbit of not caring about form, media and personal opinions and consistently surprising their opposition as underdogs. Us this year and in 2004 . Dublin in 2012.This would probably be their biggest shock to date due to the strength of the current Dublin team and what some regard a weakened Mayo team. Personally I think it all comes down to the day. I expect it to be close and Mayo to give it a real go but they will need something special from their big players. Andy Moran, Cillian O Connor and Aidan O shea will need to be banging out goals not just impressive points from far out the pitch points. .but we shall see come the third weekend of September. The Corona Virus And Possible Effects To GAA Matches - 2 Like(s)
The vast majority are in the over 40 category, yes, but there is a significant minority who do not have underlying conditions and are not young, such as a 22 year old female, International Iranian soccer player who died with it and many doctors and nurses in the 20-45 category. It is a very new virus and to think the typical Irish " It will all be grand" and make a few jokes is not how this should be dealt with. In 1918, Spanish flu killed over 20'000 in this country, we had a pop of about 4.3 million at the time of 1911 census, and roughly 800'000 got it. No, that didn't kill everyone either and luckily, unlike Spanish flu this virus targets the young less but.. In perspective, this virus has the SAME CFR (case fatality rate) as Spanish flu ( and I'd expect it to only increase with volume as hospitals become overwhelmed, as pneumonia needs oxygen treatment and those 1 in 5 cases will not all be able to receive it) Secondly, this virus has a reproductive value of between r4 and r6.7. That is double, possibly triple, as infectious as Spanish flu. So 20'000 of 1918-1919 in Ireland, could go to 60'000 here, and that is not an unrealistic estimate. Flu kills about 500 a year here, they are simply not in the same boat what so ever. If you think for a second the world's second biggest economy would build many hospitals and effectively stop production for something parallel with the flu, you're totally wrong. Everything should be closed now while we have the chance, sports, airports the lot. Also about to be the biggest economic collapse in our history, but that's another topic and not going into it as this is a sports forum and the health part is what will be the main concern. It's not about mass panic, but that will come naturally with something as serious as this. What do expect the government to do, even if they full out well know ( which I presume many of them have a fair idea)that a decent chunk of the population will die with this. They'll never tell everyone to panic. Panic is only useful for the individual, not the society. Which is up to a few like the HSE, WHO, CDC to try and prevent that, but once people start to notice the deaths/shortages of food/events being cancelled, etc. They will wake up to the reality and panic can no longer be stopped and that's the situation in most of Asia, the U.S and parts of Italy/France/Germany at the minute. GAA will always be around, banning matches is worth it if it can slow things down for a bit. They will be banning them anyway, I have no doubt about it, be it in a week, or in the next month. The virus can clearly live at high temps as well as is the case with HK and Singapore right now, so don't see a summer burn out sadly. GameOfTyrones (National) - 01/03/2020 08:47:25 |

I never worried over bird flu, swine flu(even though that is technically the same strain the killed 50-100 million back in 1918) Anyway, this is different. You only have to look at the governments of the globe to see that. If you want to find real official stats on the flu v Covid19 . You can look at the lancet medical journal. Flu infected 100 people, two go to hospital. None die and roughly 1 in 1000-2000 die. Covid19 infects 100 people, twenty go to hospital. Three die. Now those 20 will probably develop pneumonia, otherwise they probably wouldn't need to be there. That means oxygen treatment. A large number of those will need ICU. North and South of the border already has issues with beds. So you could see that 3 easily go to 10/15 in time when you can't treat people with oxygen and that is not an unrealistic possibility. Add in the fact that most of the pharma companies get their basic ingredients from China, there will come a time when there's shortages for basic drugs for diabetes and BP. Not to mention it has the possibility to almost stop the total world food supply and turn into back into the stone age. I think in this case, for once, those going to do big shops are right. Mayo Should Park The Bus V the Dubs - 2 Like(s)
Cillian has had one or two good games ,he played decent against us and he stepped it up when they played Westmeath but I don't think he played amazing the last day against Tipp ,yes he always gets high scores but he does take the frees . Been missing some of them to lately. I have watched him from his very first game of the championship. His very first game against London he was black carded after 5 mins. Galway he didn't show up . Fermanagh not really, Kildare his brother and Evan Regan really outshun him, westmeath he had a good game(although missed a lot of frees and scored mostly from play if i recall correctly), against us a decent one , against Tipp off form again . I know Mayo fans reading this hold him in serious high regard but his form is very much like Mayo's this year ,stop start . I always thought he was an amazing player but this year he isn't as good as usual , he may have a cracker of a final and prove me wrong.Evan Regan is their second highest scorer and for the life of me I don't know why he has been dropped for Doherty. Maybe due to inexperience against bigger teams or because he is not exactly a physically strong player like Andy or Cillian I don't know but I really think he should be given a start considering his speed and finese that he would bring against Dublin ,not to mention his free taking from the right side of the pitch which is pretty decent,no Dean Rock but very decent.
